One of things that I hear many instructors talking about from time to time, especially Hank Haney, is establishing a formal written plan for improvement. Do you have one of these? If so, how detailed is it? I have a number of things that I'm working on but don't really have a formal plan nor am I sure how I'd go about putting one together. What would I include? I know what end results I'm after as far as ball flight and swing mechanics are concerned but am unclear on exactly what a formal written plan would entail. Needless to say, no instructor that I've ever worked with has put one together for me either. Thoughts on this front?

On a related note; do you have a practice journal? Many emphasize keeping some sort of journal on what your working on and how it goes day by day. In fact, even Ben Hogan mentioned this in "5 Lessons". I've kept an informal practice journal on and off for a number of years. I've mainly just included things that I worked on that day, how that went, various swing thoughts, stuff like that. Thoughts on this? Do you keep a practice journal? If so, what does it contain?

After each practice session I always type in a few notes on my note pad on my iphone. Just swing thoughts or a feeling that worked for me that day. Then I review them each time before I tee it up again.

I used to, but then i got tired of planning to plan to write something down. I make mental notes

I mainly try to practice different parts of my game regularly. On various practice-only sessions (days I don't play), I try fto alternate swing-building sessions, and club-type sessions (mostly woods, putting, etc.). Generally, I buy a small bucket and stretch it out. And, if part of my game really fell apart, I'd change the rotation to work on that.

Before 2005 when I played more, I got more out of practicing for 45 minutes two or three times a week, rather than doing a two-hour marathon once a week.

I've had two surgeries in the last 13 months; I'm healing fine, and hopefully can get in at least 30 rounds this season.

Not yet, but it seems like a great idea. I'm just getting back to the game after a year or so and a practice journal would allow me to track my progress (or lack of)

Yes, I keep a rather detailed set of notes about my practices and rounds played. I attached a .doc file with typical notes from one recent round. Possibly a bit of overkill, but I am an engineer and that's the way I do stuff.

I have a little notebook that I keep with me at all times, it has all the greens and all the puts on the courses I play, The last page has my yardages which I update constantly, and here and there are swing thoughts, things to practice, a girl's number or two (you never know who you meet on the course), good shots (and why they were good shots), bad shots (and why), notes on competitors when I play in tournaments(stuff like strengths and weaknesses) etc.

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open.
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?
    • Day 47 - 2024-11-16 Light backswing work with about 3 or 4 rehearsals for every ball hit. Only about ten minutes while waiting for a potential member to show up (he was 25 minutes late). 😛
    • Idk but I would have to imagine that a putter that is aimed where you think it's aimed would be the most important aspect of a putter
