  1. 1. Which iron/wedge set-up do you think is better?

    • Standard #3-PW with 54° and 60° wedges.

    • Ditch the 5 iron, add a gap wedge, and bend the loft on 4 clubs.

So, to people who use a PW-54-60 set-up, should I be concerned at all that a 90 yard PW won't bite enough? And do you think I'm crazy for my concern about the thick rough from 105-110 yards scenario?

I don't have a very "spinny" PW and from less than 90 yards out it'll stop after a bounce or two. (I can hit it around 110 but rarely try it)

It depends on the greens you play on though. In America I've heard you guys play on greens like rocks we have softer greens over here so that might be why my shots stop quickly.

Bending is too risky and a lot of hassle and it has to be rebent again at some point, at which time your set up will have changes
I see no point in having a 60* when a 58 will do the job, at which point its easier to get a 52/3/4 so only have a 2 wedge set up.

No offense, but in what way is A even remotely complicated?

No. I didn't explain why A was complicated to me. See original A wedge mix...

Pitching Wedge = 47° / 35.75” / 7 Middle Wedge = 54° / 35.5” / 9 Lob Wedge = 60° / 35.25” / 5

Seven degrees between PW and MiddleW seemed pretty extreme, then 6 degrees between MW and LW. I jump from 50° to 56°, and I have considered dumping 56° for 54 + 58 top end. (This is my "golf worry of the week.")

But, maybe A is OK for the original poster. Maybe that's why in other threads I say things like "go with whateve works best for you."

I replaced my 3 and 5 wood and replaced them with a 4 wood so i could fit in the 52deg wedge. Lofts on my irons are unchanged.

I almost thought about getting rid of 3 and 4 iron and putting in a 4i hybrid to act as a 3 and a half iron, I find hybrids go longer than the club they claim they are replacing.

I've got

pw - 47
gw - 52
sw - 57
lw - 62

5 degree gaps is sort what I suggested to the OP.

It really depends on the irons though. With more versatile wedges, you can stretch the gaps a bit. It allows for more creativity.

more wedges, imo, gets you closer to more pins and thats where you score.

5-pw works for me.

add a hybrid for the gab between your fw metal and the 5i and go with a 52/56/60 wedge config.

you'll thank me later.

Which hybrid should I use to fill the gap from 195 to 255 yards?

Wow, lots of different suggestions. Thanks!

I am sticking with option A. What I might do is buy a 50 degree gap wedge anyway, and have the option to take out an iron once in a while (or all the time) if I think it provides an advantage. I don't want to pull any other clubs because I really like the versatility of a driver, 3 wood, hybrid set-up at the top of the bag. Most likely, I would pull the 3 iron because it gets pretty close to the hybrid distance, anyway, so it won't leave much of a gap (unless I switch to a 13.5° 3W / 17.0° H set-up, which I am considering, but that's another story). Regardless, taking a little bit off a hybrid to get a 3 iron distance is a pretty reliable shot for me, and I think it would work fine with either a 17.0° or 19.0° hybrid.

Maybe a more interesting poll would be what people think is best, a PW-54-60 set-up, or a PW-52-56-60 set-up. Could also throw in other choices such as PW-52-58 or PW-50-54-58 or PW-54-58-62. It seems like a topic with some varying opinions (it's been discussed in a lot of threads, but I don't think I've seen a poll with all of the most common options). Like I said before, my vote would go to PW-54-60 because I like the simplicity it provides for the short game while still giving all the options you need.

I'm not sure how you read his post, or mine.

I read his suggestion as dropping everything betwen a 5 iron and FW and filling that gap with one hybrid. Which hybrid would you use to fill that gap - from 5 iron to 3 wood? Or perhaps he meant the OP should keep his 19* and add a hybrid to replace the 3 and 4 iron? That seems like exactly the direction the OP was not interested in. Whatever.

Sorry thought you were the creator of the thread.

it's a pretty big gap to fill. you'd want 2 hybrids. a 4H and a 2H

depends on you pw loft, depending what set it is it can be anything between 44-47, thats a big factor in deciding your gw, sw and lw lofts.

Posted
Maybe I am too late, but just use a 4-W with a GW, SW, LW. If your hybrid is a 19, just choke down a bit to get it a 3-iron distance. Stop and think about how often you use a 3I and the 19 in a round. Maybe once or twice. How many times do you have to decide what wedge to use? Several. You are going to get much more use out of multiple wedges than the 2H or 3I.

If I am faced with a shot using a 2H/3I, I don't expect much out of it (unless on a tee box). If I am 125 on in, deciding on a wedge, I am expecting a lot out of that shot and want to be as precise as possible.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
    • Day 580 - 2026-05-04 Played eight holes. Sometimes golf kicks you in the nuts. 😉
    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
