I golfed 4 times so far this year and 2 times have been with friends or guys i was paired up with on the course and I golfed 85 and 86. But the rounds that i play myself I fall apart and shot a 94 and 96. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening with me? I'm very competitive so maybe that's a factor but i'm clueless at this point.

I would ventture to guess that you start thinking to much when you are by yourself. Others may keep your mind elsewhere which is often a better place to be, rather than always thinking about your backswing or is your grip perfect etc. etc. Or it may be that golfing with others takes you out of your routine, your pre shot routine get's quicker because someone else is waiting on you and you feel you need to rush it.

Just my 10 cents the first 2 where free

What Ping said.....also, playing by yourself sucks.....doesn't seem like it would be any fun.....I typically play busy munis, so I get a chance to make 2 or 3 new buds anytime I venture out alone....IMHO, do your best to get paired up.....

I have the opposite experience. I play by myself quite a bit and I usually shoot much better than when I play with buddies.

Sounds weird maybe, but I like to talk to myself and work through shots and decisions. When I play with people, I tend to treat them like a caddie. "What do you think, should I go with a 6 or 7 iron?".... etc. etc. I probably annoy them....

Anyway....I tend to be more focused when playing alone. But everyone is different.

Ive never been golfing alone. I am not competitive enough to ever need to go alone. I usually play with the same guy though.

Been out 10 times this year. Shot in the lower 90's playing with strangers or alone. Shot over 100 with my friends. With strangers, I was playing one tee back than usual, hitting fairways, keeping up, and making my shots. With my friends, playing from the geezer tees, I'm missing everything and spend half the day trying to get out of jail. You would think it would be the other way around, especially with the course a little shorter, and less pressure with people you know. Gotta be trying too hard.

Golf is completely different depending on who you are/ are not playing with. I end up playing with strangers quite often, and I can only remember one guy who was unpleasant and caused me to not enjoy the round. Playing with buddies can go well for me or poorly, both for the same reason: distraction. I enjoy playing alone because it is peaceful and I can enjoy being outside, but depending on the day, I might think too much about the game or my swing and the round goes south. This is the great thing about golf: every round is different, and you don't know when you might have something remarkable happen on the course.
