Why didn't you look at that before you bought them? Would seem to be an important piece of information.

There is no set loft/lie/length for clubs, every manufacturer seems to have their own way of measuring. It might even be that the other people have gone upright more and Mizuno either hasn't caught up or don't want to. I think over the years the lie angles have slowly gone up a degree or two. My 10 year old set of Mizunos that were 2º upright at the time are now almost standard.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Not a news flash - pretty commonly known in the golf world. It's Simple. Mizuno is a Japanese company. The average height for a Japanese man is 5 ft 7.5 in. Thus, a flatter "standard" lie angle. The average American man is 5 ft 10 in. So most American companies have a more upright standard lie angle.

You have that backwards, btw. Clubs are usually flatter for shorter players.

And better players tend to prefer a slightly flatter club anyway.

Mine were too upright when I got them so I had each iron bent 1-2 degrees flatter. Hitting them much more solidly now.

I just got Mizuno mp 68 irons would a flat lie angle promote a hook? because lately i have been hitting a high hook that starts at the pin then lands on left side of green.

No. Too upright - the heel's gonna dig in, turning the club in at impact = pull/hook/"trap draw!!"

Too flat - the toe's gonna dig in, and you'll hit a weak shot and miss right.

To know the lie angle you should use, use the tried and true method of a special tape on the sole and hitting full real shots off a (normally) thin plastic flat board, You can hit a shot and look immediately at the tape to see exactly how your shaft and clubhead combined at impact. I don't think you can make such a decision about your lie just by soling the club and looking at it statically. Typically, the clubhead toe deflects downward due to the shaft bend when you make a full swing so if your club soles perfectly at rest, the odds are it is not right when actually hitting a shot. That is what I've always been told.

That's not why. The toe and heel will dig in, but that's after impact, not before impact.

A club that's too flat, due to the loft, will send the ball to the right. Take your pitching wedge and hold it so the shaft is vertical - where's the face pointing? Up and to the right. Now hold it so the shaft is horizontal - where's the face pointing? 45 degrees left. That's why - it has nothing to do with the heel or toe digging in.

Just to follow up......ive always pushed my irons slightly but with pure contact for about 6 years when i moved to mizuno's. love the feel. never even once thought to check the lie angle!!! moved it 2 degrees upright and was on target everytime. hit a couple fat shots but over all t was the best 30 dollars spent. got pretty sun burned so i wont be playing again for a few days.

Anyone who buys a nice set of Mizzy's (or any other nice clube for that matter) and doesn't get fitted is just asking for trouble. Yes, you can save a few hundred bucks by getting standard setup off eBay, but isn't that money worth the better shot making and enjoyment of the game?

    • Not exactly what I thought the article would be about but a little interesting. I immediately thought of @collegefbfan post.  I would like to believe that most instructors have a genuine passion to help their students get better, but I'm sure somewhere there's a guy that gives you just enough to make you have to come back. @iacas can answer this.  Other than being a PGA professional, is any governing body on certifications for an instructor?  I know of the USGTF but is that 100% legitimate?  Ryan: Lessons from the worst golf instructor in America In Tampa, there is a golf course that boasts carts that do not work, a water range, and a group of players none of which have any chance to break 80...
    • Is the guy a PGA professional or a USGTF professional, or just a guy that tinkers in a shop and has a pretty good golf game? Not knocking you in any way, just curios. Did he take a look at your clubs and take any measurements to see if your clubs length/ lie were OK for you? If you are hitting on a full size range then the launch monitor isn't 100% necessary, ball flight will tell you a lot along with some foot powder on the club face. If all he has is a net then yes a launch monitor is needed.  50 bucks an hour seems like a good deal. I pay 50 for a 1/2 hour. 30 mins is about all my mind will absorb and I leave with one solid thing to practice and a few drills to last to next time. Keep us posted on your journey.
    • I had a issue with the watch picking up the sensors on a consistent basis. I did what the instructions said, but since I have a GPS watch and an H4 I sent it back rather than to try to work out the issue.
    • The Golfing Machine calls a shorter full swing motion “pitching” IIRC but I don’t think that’s what was going on here. Did you get video or anything? Launch monitor data?
    • ^ right here. A short game pitching motion is not the same as a full swing in feel nor intent. It’s just not a mini-swing at all. Now if the instructor said to make slow full swings with a 6i and try to hit them only 100 yards, that would be more in line with what I view full swing instruction to be.
