I am a single digit handicap player, but I have a quirky little issue that creeps into my golf swing and messes me up from time to time.

I'm not sure if I am ever so slighhtly losing my balance during the backswing and transition from slightly leaning into the ball and then trying to use my feet to compensate for the seemingly lost balance OR whether I am slightly lifting my toes and this is causing me to go slightly off balance. Either way, the result will typically be a fat shot.

I have worked incredibly hard to get this out of my game, but it comes back at times. I have been working to really keep my feet "quiet" because this is what works best for me to strike the ball correctly. Honestly, I feel as though I may lose a little power - my 7 iron will drop from 160-165yards down to 150-155yards - but I strike the ball so much better, feel more balanced, and still end up in the proper follow through position that I am more than willing to make this sacrifice.

Anyway, does anyone have any good ideas about this? I'm looking for ideas that will help promote better balance throughout the golf swing and for not having my feet become counter productive within the swing.

This may or may not be in the same vein as your problem, but I used to have active feet with all clubs (think of Jack Nicklaus' left foot while he's hitting a driver). It was worse with short shots, like knockdowns and pitches. This was about a dozen years ago. I'd read something in a golf mag about Nick Faldo practicing without shoes on (barefoot). I found a range where this wasn't frowned upon - actually I didn't care. I'd wear sandals there and slip them off to hit a few balls, focussing on feeling my entire foot - toes through heels - staying on the ground throughout the swing. It took a few range sessions (and a couple months), but now my feet feel like they're nailed down when I swing.

Put a quarter on each foot. The one on the front foot should stay for the entire swing. The one on the backfoot should stay for the entire backswing, but of course will fall on the downswing.

Keep your stance narrow. I do a drill where I hit 5 irons with my feet together. It really helps you to get the feel for rotating your torso with overinvolving the lower body.

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position.
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.
    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
