Was at the range yesterday when someone mentioned how forward my hands were relative to the ball. I started putting my hands forward late last season when I started hitting a big draw. Hands forward last season gave me very solid contact at the time. What are the good and bad about having the hands forward?

If this is working for you wear ear plugs. So many variants of the golf swing no one tip is universal.

are you talking about at address? hand position at address means absolutely nothing. it does not have any impact upon your hand position at impact.

That's not correct... Handle position has a cascading effect in most players. It can influence not only the path the club and hands take back, but also how much rotation the hands have, and the timing of the overall swing. Handle position

can change shot shape from a 10-yard draw to a 5-yard cut in some players. If it's working for you, earplugs, I agree. But there's typically a range of acceptable handle positions. You never want to be further forward than impact fix, and you typically don't want the shaft leaning back at all...

My hands forward equals bad, nothing has gone well for me with my hands forward.

I think if your hands are too far forward, your right shoulder will tend to tilt down at address, which makes it really hard to keep from swaying back. That then leads into a bunch of problems, obviously. How far forward are your hands?

Why is that? My guess is above, but I'm not confident that it's correct.

I've noticed that if I am able to bring the club from the inside - keeping my hands ahead of the ball is a good thing. Ernie Els does this and it's a sweet swing! But, this is my experience.

Good to know. Recently, ive been playing with the ball further back in my stance and hands in front of the ball. As long as i come from the inside, i hit a nice push draw. Glad to see i'm not the only one who does it and its even better to know a player of Els caliber does it too.

Are we talking about "forward press" in the setup? I found last year that using the forward press helped my contact greatly and I started to hit down on the ball and take divots in front of the ball. I tend to sway back to front in my swing which may be a by product of the press. I am working on taking some of the press out of my setup and eliminating the sway.

Ball position in the middle of my stance and my hands to the inside of my left thigh. I've been practicing not having too much forward press with my irons but have lost some yards on the longer irons.

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open.
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?
