The shot I have the hardest time with is downhill lies. I have trouble hitting behind the ball. I have tried clubbing up to increase the loft and getting my shoulders parallel to the slope. But I think I am still dropping my back shoulder during the downswing causing me to hit it fat. Anyone have any suggestions I can try to help with this shot?

Where is the ball played in the stance? I usually take a stronger grip and play the ball back, then really try to make sure I get my weight back behind the ball on the backswing. It'll go through, you won't have to worry about that part.

Check the alignment, too. Lots of people aim right on downslopes, I've found.

when you say you take a stronger grip what exactly do you mean? if you could explain this in a bit more depth that would be outstanding as I struggle with this shot as well, also if you wouldn't mind to describe what you do on an uphill lie that would be great.

Stronger = turn your hands to the right (for a right-handed golfer). Helps to close the clubface. Since the ball is back in your stance, you want to close it a little earlier.

Grip pressure should remain the same. "Stronger" is not the same as "Tighter" in this case.

Good advice about moving the ball back. I hadn't thought of that. I will have to try it this afternoon. We have one par 5 that the second shot is always from a pretty severe downhill lie unless you just crush the ball.

cdriver,

I used to have the same problem. It sounds to me like you're either not fully matching your shoulders to the downhill slope, or you're not trusting the fact that the club will come through and are trying to compensate and lift the ball in the air. One good drill which helped me is actually walking through down the slope after your follow through, that will make sure you're not hanging back. Do you practice this shot? You're doing everything right, just trust it.

    • Day (2 May 24) - somehow I missed posting both Tues and Weds practice sessions - so the streak ends and a new one begins…. Focus today was on ball first contact using the Divot Board for reference.   Worked with 7i, 9i and GW hitting hard foam balls.  Started hap hazardly and then settled back into my pre-shot setup.  Much more consistent in the latter.
    • So, Newey is out at Red Bull. Where does he go in a year? Is Max still with RBR in 2026? Hmmmm.
    • August 2010 Woodfin Ridge 18th hole Playing in a large tournament with a slew of friends and the last day was two man best ball. The 18th, when it was bent grass, was very fast due to a steep slope on the right side. I had seen many people over the years putt off the green from above the hole. I hit a great drive and 3W to 30’ left of the hole. With everyone watching my partner hit it way too fast and never high enough and his ball rolled all the way to the bottom of the green.  I hit mine much higher and the ball came to rest about 20” above the hole. Then it slowly started trickling towards the hole for a walkoff eagle! Nobody said anything except my partner who was yelling pretty loudly. I looked at the crowd and told them it was okay to clap because it was a great putt, and they gave me a bunch of polite golf claps and brought me a beer!
    • Day 127: 5/2/24 Stack Full Speed spectrum training session 6/24. Training speed was 5 mph higher than previous high, as was e-speed. Still not as high as I have done in previous programs, but just 1 mph lower. Battling through a neck issue, and possible trigger fingers. Happy with results.
    • Day 49. Played 9 from tees a bit beyond my comfort zone and was humbled. Hit a couple good shots so will take that at least.
