Im looking into new irons and along with the Titliest Ap1 im looking into the ping g15 and i15. First off which do you think would better suit my game. Low 80 player at the moment and have all the potential to be practically scratch by end of summer. I am 17 yrs old and will play probably about 5 days week in the summer. so G15 or i15? Also, are the grooves on these clubs conforming to the new rules?

should help you out quite a bit, it will tell your fittings ( what dot color you are) and it recommends clubs to you from what you input to the system.

I would recommend the i 15 irons based on your aspirations and they are great sticks for single handicappers...however, I would go hit all the clubs you mentioned (demo day) if possible because you might find one that fits your eye and your swing better...good luck!

Hi,
Stay away from G15 if you think you are going to get down to single figures, i would also sugest not buying the Ap1's.
I the clubs you should be looking at, are the I15's as you said (I carry a 3 iron in these clubs, goes very well!) and I would also look the the Ap2's. Also im not sure if you are going to buy your set over the internet (witch I sugest don't! Get fitted!!!) You could buy the Nike Vr blades P-7 Then get 6-4 or 3 what ever you like, in the cavity backs.

Buy there are lots of fantasic clubs on the market now days, don't limet yourself to just a few sets!

Ap1's are the game imp club. If you are looking at single figures, then the Ap2's provide more workability and better feel.

+1 forged vs cast, it seems that most low cappers go with the AP2s. Mizuno's MP line would be good to look into as well.

Oh the Ap1's are not forged???? Wow Def go the Ap2's then skip the 1's. Yea, mizuno is great gear to!

I suggest trying SEVERAL different types of irons. If you are a 20 now, shaving over 10 strokes this year is a stout goal. Buying equipment for the future is not necessarily the way to get there. I understand the $$$ factor and the aspirations. But you've got to walk before you can run. Ping is a good company and they produce very nice irons. You can go long with them. But if you truly do improve, you may find that other equipment will suit you better long term. Don't limit yourself. There's lots of equipment that suits people better than others. That's why they have it. Good luck.

Many tour players are using GI clubs. Several play the G-15 irons. KJ choi plays the G-15's. Poulter also plays G-15's. So hit the clubs and pick what you like best. The thought that a low HC'er should be playing players irons is a lot about ego. Kenny Perry was playing regular R7 irons for a while also. If tour pro's use them why not the average Joe's.

KP's choice also has a lot to do with swing speed correct? The difference in workability between a typical "players" iron and the typical "game improvement" iron is much different. That being said, I know there are plenty of sets now that are combos, mixing the muscle and cavity backs. Also, mixing different sets of clubs is never a bad idea, it just doesn't look as nice; but we all know there are no pictures on the scorecard.

KJ choi plays the G-15's

Correct, not sure why a Tour Player would want to play heads that big but it works for him...

Poulter also plays G-15's

Since when? he plays all Cobra irons, a mixed set which are 4-7 Pro CB and 8-pw Pro MB not G15's?

Hi,

Now I don't know that I agree with this...I went to the Transistion Championship this year and being a PING fan as I scouted WITB of the Pro's all day (mainly on the 16th tee...what a great golf hole)...I could not believe all the Pro's with full sets of G15 irons in the bag...Choi, Garret, Purdy, Mayfair just to mention a few...so there must be somehting to these clubs and now with Choi doing so good on a golf course like the Masters with tight lies everywhere and playing G15 irons (with those huge soles) you have got to take a look at these sticks...

Now back to my orginal post about the i 15 irons...I wrote that just because I know these sticks and I am a single digit handicap...I like them alot for what I want out of my game...Also I noticed quite a few Pro's sporting these in the bag at the Transistion as well...Slocum, Wilson, DeMarco, Quinney, etc... So back to what I said at the end of my earlier post...do not count any irons out on the shelf. You need to check them all out and see what works best for your swing...also you need to decided what works best for your game...meaning if you want to work the ball then an iron like the G15 will be harder to work versus the i15...but if you want to hit the ball straight then GI irons are what you desire and should be more forgiving...clear as mud...Good Luck!!!
