I realize that putter length is a lot about feel but I wanted some advice from folks that know what they are talking about.

I am 6'3 and I am a Novice club maker. I built myself a Snake Eyes Tour Platinum Putter that has 3 degrees of loft and a 72 degree lie angle. I thought I wanted a longer putter because I would like the feel, but now I think the length is negatively impacting my putting.

It's 36 inches long and I know it's too long, I just don't know where to start with the cut down process. I seem to scuff the green before I hit the ball a lot and this must be from it being too long, correct?

36 inches is pretty crazy long considering I'm not like 6'7 or something, right? I have a really nice oversized Winn grip that I'm going to try and salvage and take off (it was $14) and then I'm going to cut it down.

Any advice on putter length and trying to determine what is right for me?

It's all relative to your stance and what you feel comfortable with. For example, I certainly don't think 36" is crazy long being that I'm 5'10" and use a 35" putter.

I cant say for sure about the length.. I guess a good baseline for somebody your height is 35. But Phil Mickleson is about your height but he uses a 32 or 33 inch putter. So it all depends on your style. If youre stubbing the putter in the ground alot, youre likley taking it back with your wrists and lifting it into the air.

The modern convention if you look at tour pro's is to have a short putter as possible so your arms hang free which will reduce wrist bend and hence the risk of the yips. I know Harold Swash is a big advocate of this technique and it seems to work for his 'students'.
