I have been trying to work on an appropriate shot for the following situation: about 10-15 yards off the green with junk in front of you and not much green to work with before the pin. I have tried a shot in which I set up like I'm chipping but have the club face really open like a flop shot. It pops up quickly and higher than the average chip and dies pretty quickly. Anybody else use something like this? Or what do you do?

Do you keep your wrists firm through the shot? A "flop" usually requires a good amount of finesse and you use your wrists to open the club and really slid the wedge under the ball.

For a real flop shot, I use mostly arms with relatively dead hands a la Dave Pelz. For the "flop chip" I keep my wrists firm like a regular chip with hands leading but the club face open and the ball a little bit more forward.

I still remember my first round of golf when I never picked up a club before, and for some reason, that's what I though a chip was and was pretty much the only shot I could hit. Still the most consistent shot I've got, yet now after reading so much, I'm afraid to use it.

it's basically a little trick shot where you clip right under the ball to pop it up. I've got it way forward with the club face open and just nip it with some speed.

10-15 yards, depends.

Flop Shot,
Lay clubface open, have it aiming were you want to the ball to go. Opening your stance helps you achieve this. You want to play the ball slightly forward in the stance with a narrow stance. You want to keep your head down through the shot as possible. Take a huge swing and do not hold on to the club, let your natural release come through, just don't flip the hands. The ball should just go straight up. Swing in the direction your feet are pointing.

Flop chip,
Lay the club slightly open, open the stance, aim the clubface were you want to ball to go. Play the ball slightly back of center. I like to keep the hands positioned over the ball, and you want to take the club back with a slight hinge and keep the hands moving forward through impact, keep the clubhead going low as long as possible, it should slide under the ball popping it up.
