Golf is a stupid game (just shot my best score EVER, haha)

So I shot 76 today. Best I've ever shot.

What was amazing was that I really hit the ball horribly off of the tee. I have like 3 swing changes/issues going on at once (not cool!) and today I was getting in a really weird, almost 'stuck, position and pushing it badly a few times off of the tee.

Also, every time I hit a really s**t tee ball, I ended up in another fairway or at least with a clean lie to go at a pin. I got bailed out of certain tree trouble on 18 when I hit a screamer into a tree trunk that bounced into the fairway. Lucky as hell. I missed in a good place with the 2nd shot and got up and down easily.

The reason I played and scored well was that from 175 and in I was out of my mind. Didn't badly mishit a shot inside of 175 yards all day. Lights out putting. Crisp wedges. Up and down a few times. A few big birdie putts after stuffed approaches.

Yet, I don't feel great about the round like I should. Pushing the long clubs like crazy...only one tee shot that felt good, and a lot of the long balls that weren't BIG pushes were soft 5-8 yard fades (this applies to driver, fairway and hybrids) that were 15-20 yards shorter than what they should be. I guess the long ball game has a lot to do with our self-esteem.

Golf's a stupid (GREAT) game.

I was honestly about to start a similar thread. I had the same basic experience today. I scored well, but only because I had one of my best short game days ever. I just could not get my long game working though! It just feels like I can't put it all together on the same day. I guess it just stresses how important the short game and course management are when it comes to scoring. It just stinks knowing that if I could have played a little better long I presumably could have gone much lower.

Funny how we all acknowledge the short game's importance, and recognize that out best rounds are usually those when we're sharp around the greens. And yet, it's almost more satisfying to play well from tee to green and score worse...

Ironic how we realize the short game is the most crucial aspect to scoring, but feel almost like we've "cheated" when the putter saves us. Golfers are weird. Sean

Hey man congrats! Thats just golf for you. I played the same course twice this weekend. Shot an 82 on Friday with 7 fairways and 10 greens....and today I shot an 81 with only 3 fairways and 6 greens. Like you, everything from 180 in was money. I only 3 putted for bogey once, too. Golf is a really weird game but thats why I love it!
