The only thing my driver does is drive me nut...

I seem to hit my driver off the heel and goes about 170-200 yards ( I use to be A medium-long hitter around 250)....

Even getting away from the ball does not help much,

on the other side, I have never hit my irons better, I take my 5 Iron and overdrives my drive...

anybody have some clues about what may be the problem.

At least my scores is not that hurt because I don't loose any balls.

Hey Frenchie, "nuts" is plural!

Just kidding - my inlaws are all French so hear it all. "C'est une game ce soir".

You'll most likely get a request for video to help people better diagnose your issues.

I had a similar issue, it's possible that your swing is getting a little steep with the driver. Try focusing on the traditional 'low and slow' takeaway to make sure you're staying on plane. Get your arms outstretched at the mid point of your backswing (club in front of the hands, please) and naturally fold to the top from there. Also, FWIW - I'm not sure why it works for me but I've found that lining the ball up with the toe of the driver (no reaching, etc. Just make sure the ball is naturally at the toe of the club with a normal address position) really helps me to make consistent contact with the sweet spot and promotes a nice in/out swing path. I'm sure this points to a deficiency in my general swing plane or arm position at set up but this one thing improved my driver consistency and distance more than all the tips I've ever tried combined. Score one for impact tape - definitely the most underrated swing tool in the world. Oddly enough, I don't need to make this adjustment for any other club in my bag. Only the driver.

Any time people mention hitting their irons well and their driver poorly, chances are they are coming into the ball incorrectly. Remember, we hit our irons on the downswing, however we hit driver on the upswing. Make sure your motion through the ball with the driver is more of a sweeping motion (think of sweeping a broom), rather than a descending blow.

With the driver, the ball should be struck somewhere around -1 to +1 degrees of attack angle. The average on the PGA Tour is -1 degree, that is one degree descending down on the ball. Don't try to hit it on the way up, most that do it end up with a swing bottom way back.

Without a video it is impossible to diagnose your swing properly.

I know is hard without a video..but I don't have this handy.

Went to the range, from the ball marks, looks like I'm hitting low on the club face and the ball goes very high in the sky.

thanks for all the answers, I will try to find my swing back.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
