Sooo Frustrating. I shot a 95 today. I had 8 3 putts. It was very frustrating. If you add that to the 2 chunked chips, I easily take my round from a 95 into the 80's.

I wasn't driving the ball very well today but I recovered very well. Guess I know what I need to work on.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

-8 strokes to put those all down to acceptable 2 putts. -2 for two chunked chips you shoot an 85. This game can be maddening, can't it? We've all had those days. The good score gone bad by little mistakes that soon add up heavily on the score card. Obviously the putting is the thing to work on there, but if your first putts for most of those were from a considerable distance or had aggressive break, don't beat yourself up too bad.

I don't know if you're like this, but I used to be the type of person that would lose my composure quickly with 3-putts and duffed chips, just stay positive and play each shot independently and hopefully you won't see too many more of those dreaded 3-putts. :)

No doubt the problem here is my lag putting. In almost every instance I left the putt short. And when I did garner up the courage to get it to the hole I usually missed the hole and blew it 6+ feet past.

Usually when I have a bad day putting there's something else wrong in addition to my putting. The only time I ever 3 putt is when I've left myself about a mile and a half from the hole. In most cases it's because I missed the green with my approach and then screwed up really bad with my chip shot. I should still be able to get out of there with a 2 putt but my frustration with all the trouble I had getting on the green causes me to tense up and leave the lag putt way short. I'm a really good putter if do say so myself, but if I'm not striking the ball well and/or struggling with my short game it puts too much pressure on my putter to try and pull my fat out of the fire. The point being, practicing your putting is always a good thing but it's also helpful to figure out what other factors besides poor putting might have led to all those 3 putts.

When I skimmed over the title, I read it as, 'I shot a 95 day with 83 putts'.

Whoever came up with the saying, "A bad day of golf is better than a good day at work", is a moron.

I can empathize. I shot a similar round on Saturday. Was striking the ball really well. Hit about 70% of fairways with my driver. I was making GIRs. But I had SOOO many 3 putts (and even a 4 putt!) it just ruined my score. I should have easily shot in the mid 80s. I just had no feel on the greens. Frustrating game, golf is. When one thing finally starts clicking (for me it was accuracy of the tee), something else breaks down. Putting is a tricky thing. Some days the hole seems a foot wide and you roll it great, other days it seems smaller than the ball and impossible to find your groove.

Well this thread suited my game last saturday...Shot a 94 with 9x 3putt...Pitched a 40yd to save bogey :( Eleminate those bad 3putts and I would've/could've been in the 80s as well...its the life of this game...I still enjoy every minute of it...

I am kinda funny, for every three putt, I seem to bomb one in from distance on another hole.

But yeah days like that can (and do) happen.

Despite what it looks like on TV and what you are "supposed" to do, two-putting in many cases is actually really hard, especially on fast, slow, slopey, two tiered, and large greens. Perhaps you shouldn't expect to two-putt every green, and should not take anything for granted. I don't get mad at 3-putts any more, I just take what I learned about green speed to the next hole, and take what I learned about that particular green to the next round. Last round, I three putted the first green, but only one other green after that.

Yep I played 18 yesterday, shot an 88 with 6 x 3 puts, most of these were on greens I hit GIR including a par 3

Don't get me wrong 88 is still a good score for me even with all the puts but I just hate 3 puts and what a score it could have been....

Earlier this year I was struggling with my putter, missing way too many from inside 5 ft. I made up my mind I was going to become the king of the 3 ft. putt. I've been practicing my putting like a mad man. For example, at night instead of sitting in my easy chair watching TV I spend hours on end watching TV while putting into a coffee mug. Now I rarely ever miss from inside 5 ft. and never from inside 3 ft. Still, I have those days when I have way too many putts. A couple of weeks ago I had one of my worst rounds ever in my league. I shot a 51 (9 holes) with 20 putts. The main reason I had so many putts that night was because my chipping was horrendous. Yesterday OTOH, I shot 83 (18 holes) with 30 putts. 14 on the front and 16 on the back. I had two 3 putts, both of which were because of chip shots that left me more than 20 ft. from the hole. I had a lot of 1 putts because I was chipping the ball inside 5 ft. I'm at the point now where I pretty much expect to make it if it's that close. Just think. If I could have chipped it close and 1 putted on those two bad holes where I had 3 putts I would've broken 80 for the first time in my life. The moral of the story? Work really hard on your chipping and bunker play as well as your putting. Practice those short 5 ft. putts until you can practically make them blindfolded. Learn how to lag those long ones up close and sink the 2 footer. You'll be amazed at how much your scores will drop.

My reason for my 3 puts was the first long put, could not release the putter head yesterday and all my long puts came up well short, like 10 feet

I am putting it down to the fact that as I get better and I am hitting more GIR my long putting will get better as will my GIR accuracy, if I miss the green then I chip on and normally always get it within 5 feet whcih I will make most of the time.
