I recently went to a custom fitting for irons with the hopes of finding my perfectly fitted irons. I came out of that 3 hour session with more questions and confusion than ever before.

Long story short, I was fitted to a shaft that doesn’t come as one of the options that Titleist AP2s builds.
I was specifically fitted for Nippon Pro 1150 Tour Stiff ( http://www.nipponshaft.com/steel_1150gh_tour.html ), so am looking for any other shafts with specs close to it from the following Titleist shaft options: http://www.titleist.com/golfclubs/sh...t.asp?Filter=4

I currently play Dynamic True Temper S300 steel shafts for my irons, but the fitter said with my tempo, that shaft is a bit too heavy for me. Plus, I’d like to launch my irons a bit higher than my current clubs.

Here are my quick stats from the fitting with a 6-iron:
Avg. ball speed: 117-121mph
Avg. carry: 168 yards
Launch angle: forget the exact degree, but the fitter said it was a tad on the lower side and would like to see it go up a bit
Spin rate: ~5,700 RPM, the fitter said this was right on

Purely looking at the numbers, it looks like the True Temper Dynamic Gold HL w/Sensicore stiff shaft might be a close fit. But it’s so hard to decide without actually hitting them.

I’ve also inquired about a Titleist demo day at a local course, but I think they just have stock clubs and I won’t be able to test out these different “Titleist” shafts like I did for my fitting. Why is this so hard? I’m kind of frustrated and exhausted now, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey , what was your swing speed. Mine is 82 w 6 iron. I just got the new ap2 irons and love them but i got the dynamic gold HL shaft. I dont like the shaft and am getting them replaced. They launch the ball extremely high and put tons of spin on the ball. To me its more for a senior player. I would hit the shafts before you make your decision. I found that I dont like the really light shafts like the nippon and HL even though thats what the fitter recommended.

I might just go for the dynamic gold s300 but there are other options like project x etc. What does anyone else out there recommend for the ap2 irons. Here is a list of the shafts they offer. The dyanmic gold is the standard now, When the ap2's first came out the project x was the standard. They had to of had a reason why they switched. http://www.titleist.com/golfclubs/sh...t.asp?Filter=4

I am hearing a lot of good things about KBS tour shafts in AP1 and 2s They aren't a titleist option (i don't think so) but are meant to be very consistent over the project X. Search www.mygolfperformance.com for further info on the above.

I don't quite remember the exact swing speed for my 6-iron, but somewhere in the 80s sound about right. My driver swing speed is 100-105mph if that helps.

It's interesting to hear your review about the DG HL shaft. Do you normally launch the ball pretty high even before going to that shaft? Also, there seems to be all different kinds of Project X shafts though (e.g. 5.5, 6.0, 6.5). Not sure which one would be ideal for me. stebed - I actually tried the FST KBS Tour shaft during my fitting and I really didn't like the feel of it. Thanks for the suggestion though.

well I dont have a problem getting the ball up. I would say my shots are normal, when I used the dynamic high launch shafts the shaft was very light and you could tell it had a strong kick. I could push down on the tip and it would bend really easy. I mean my ball was shooting up and putting tons of spin. I hit a pw shot and it probably chucked back 5 feet and that wasnt even on a green. Definitly try them first and dont go off a fitters recommendation only. There is alot of threads online of project x 5.5 and 6.0 vs dynamic gold s300. Most were saying that the project x shaft was a bit too stiff and less feel for them compared to the s300 even the 5.5. The same with rifle vs. s300.
