I shot a 74 at Deltona Club in Deltona FL!

I started on 10, and played the back/front.

I started the round off with a 3 putt. Ended up with 18 putts on the first nine.

At around the 13th hole, I realized I was doing well, and stayed focused, and kept my routine and thought "smooth tempo". I ended up playing the last 9 at 3 under par, my best 9 hole round ever! I also only had 10 putts on this nine, best putting round ever!

I finished with 5 birdies, 7 pars and 5 bogies, and one double bogey.
I hit 9 fairways and 9 greens
I had one lost ball and 2 bunker shots
The greens were rough, and slow. I had a blast! I am excited!

Well done - Breaking 80 for the first time, by 6 strokes is quite something, you must be buzzing!

Now all you need to do is do it again, and again, and again....haha

Buzzing is a good word for it. I have this stupid smile...giggling even...lol. It feels very good. I do look forward to repeating it. Off to the practice tee today though!

Congrats! Those 5 birds are nice, just eliminate some bogies and your under par!

Ya know...I started the round with a 3 putt...missed a 3 footer. Greens were in ROUGH shape. This winter was hard on courses here in FL.

I also lost a ball on a Par 5 that I went for-greenside. It was in play, I am certain of it. I just couldn't find the darned thing. Even if I didn't get up and down for a birdie, and 2 putted, there is another 2 strokes. I have proven to myself that I can do it. I just need to manage my expectations properly to continue doing it...for instance not get upset. Even when I lost that ball, I went back out to where I hit it, dropped, and hit another pin high. To paraphrase Bob Rotella: Two expectations-have fun and focus on every shot.

not to bring you down, but i broke 80 for the first time in 15 years a month or so ago and have only broken 90 once since then. i thought i had it figured out and started trying to birdie every hole and BLAM! 95. just treat your 74 as another round and play the next one like you are trying to break 80 for the first time.

I felt confident and focused. It felt as if I performed my routine, it would work out well. The day inspired confidence, for sure! I also realized that f I hit a bad shot, I knew I could get out of trouble, if I played smart. I had a lesson just last week, so I needed this confidence. Saturday, I shot a 97-and I was focused on my lesson. This round, I focused on tempo, and swinging smoothly. It was my best ballstriking day for sure and I putted well. I bought a divot tool from the course, so everytime I pull it out of the bag to start a round, it will remind me of the feelings from this round and help me to focus, and maintain confidence.

As for the shots, some of them went where and how I intended! Although I had a couple of bad misses, I recovered well. For instance I bladed a PW over the green. Chipped in from 30 yds for birdie! No way I would have done that if I was upset for blading the ball.

Congratulations! I'm waiting to break 80 as well...I shot 81 once and all my scores are around 84 strokes now so I feel confident that I can do it this weekend.
Just keep on working hard and I'm sure those 70 somethings will keep on coming :)

Congrats!

That is a very nice accomplishment.......now do it again!

I recently broke 90 for the first time in a year.....88, 89 last summer, slipped into the mid 90's last Fall, Winter & Spring. Then, after changing to the new PowerBilt Nitrogen charged Driver & Irons, I shot 88, 87, 87, 86, 84 84, 82.

Now, I too am thinking that I can break 80!

I've only broken it once. I've hit 80 a bunch of times though. On one of my 80s, I doubled every single par 3. I've never had 5 birdies in a round before. That's pretty darn good.

Some of the responses on here surprise me. One guy lists his index as 11. I would think a 13 or 14 handicapper would have broken 80 before.

Don't worry about bringing me down, that is the reality of the game. That is where managing expectations comes in to play. I have learned that focusing on tempo, and preshot routine is desirebale. I have read that for a while now, but proved it to myself. This round followed a 97 over the weekend, so I am painfully aware of the fluctuations in scoring.

Something tells me the low teens cappers that haven't broken 80 are much more consistent than I am...they shoot in the low to mid 80s regularly. I'll get there!
