It looks like my wife is actually going to give the OK to buying new irons. I have been using my Top Flite Tours for 7 seasons. That said, any suggestions? I like an iron with a heavier feel to it and I prefer steel shafts. I want to keep the damage bellow $1000.

With $1,000 your possibilities are just about endless. You should end up with a great set of irons with that much moola.

The first thing you should think about is what kind of iron you'd like. Are you looking for ultra-forgiving irons, a thin or thick topline, big or small head, etc... There are irons of every type to satisfy your taste.

The $1000 might end up wishful thinking. I will more likely be in the under $800 range unless I can really convince her that it's worth it.

uh... Top Flite Tour.. the set I lost my golf virginity to

Sweet. As every suggestion - this one is very subjective - check out the TP line of the Taylor Made irons. the 2005 rac TP's or even the 2006 MB are sweet. I hear from some dude in PA ( ) that the r7 TP are sweet as well if muscle back is a bit much to you. Make sure you check out eBay as well - that should keep you well under $800 no matter what you choose. Good luck

There are some things to consider.....do you like blades or cavity back irons? What brand do you prefer? Ping, Taylor made, Callaway etc. Do you like stiff or reg. shafts? I like a periferal weighted iron and I have the Ping Zings and the Callaway Great Big Bertha irons. Both give me the look I like when I gaze down at the club behind the ball.

You can get a like new set of irons on ebay for about a third of what you will pay at the Pro Shop or a golf store like Golfsmith or Edwin Watts. Both of my sets are used but the one that came off ebay was like new. The Callaways belonged to a co-worker. Look around and you can get a great set of irons for under $400.00

Thanks for all the great help so far. The Ebay thing might be tough for me. I'm 6'8" and play my irons +1.25" and 3 degrees upright. I will definately do a fitting with a pro. I love all of the Titleist clubs I have, but I worry that their irons may not be forgiving enough. I am a 17.7 handicap and I hit my irons farther than average. 5 Iron about 200, 8 Iron 150, etc. I am also wondering about the possibility of forgoing a 3I and seeing if I can replace it with a GW. I love my 3 Hybrid and have a hard time believing that the one I get with the set will be better. I do like the look of a more substantial head. I don't think blades are for me.

    • Day  3 (4 May 24) - Easy pitch day with 9i in the backyard.  Worked on staying smooth thru impact, keeping shots to 20yds or less.
    • From what I’ve read, it was in the manufacturing process and how the covers were nicking pretty easy.  He has had to resource his factory as the one used earlier is now a TM owned facility.  Initial reports seem to indicate the redesign is going to be a winner…
    • Day 129: 5/4/24 Stack training but could not certify my warmup speed. Dealing with a pulled neck muscle. Chips and pitches at a local course for about 15 minutes.
    • Typically less than 50. I find this can be affected by the "CART" signs on a given course. I don't like taking my rangefinder out of the cart and carrying it around to the green. I am very fearful I will leave it somewhere.
    • First ever holed out greenside bunker shot! It's crazy it took this long to finally get one during a round, but the cold streak is officially over. Hole 6 on the Palmer Course at PGAN. I hit my driver like 225 into a really stiff wind, then worm burned a hybrid into the bunker. I was about I dunno, 40-45 feet away. Birdie! Let's go! The red Xs the approximate location of each shot.  Really fun!!
