Hello, I wanted to put up a clip of my swing and see if I can get any help. Just started playing golf again after a long break in college. Im trying to get good and get my swing right so all the help I can get is greatly appreciated. I put it in slow motion. I would especially want input from the pro's on the site like iacas and butch but all help is welcome. Thanks again guys.

Looks like your stance is either slightly open or your back foot is pointing away from your target instead of being square. It also looks like your reaching for the ball a bit - do you have a down-the-line view? The other thing I notice is that your arms don't get very high at the top of your backswing... again, I think a down-the-line view would reveal more about your swing than this face-on shot...

I'm no pro though - hopefully someone else can shed some light for you...

Also, it looks like you sway a bit on your backswing - although your hips drive forward nicely through the ball...

Thanks, Yea I noticed my stance was a little open when I was watching the video. So do you want both feet square. Im also trying to get my arms to be right at the top of my swing, not sure if they are. Not sure what you mean by reaching for the ball, what do you think I should do to fix that? Thanks for your input Ross!

Also here is the normal speed version.

widen your stance a little bit. jk, seriously though, your feet are so far apart i don't see how you're not falling over when you swing. bring that back leg in a little bit. square up your back foot and open your front foot a quarter turn from square. the rest of your swing looks pretty good, actually. if you're having inconsistencies or pulling the ball left, you might want to weaken your grip a little bit, it's quite strong. but if not, forget that last sentence.

For the feet, it is normal to have the back foot perpendicular to the target line and the front foot open (slightly pointing your toe to the target) by about 30* or so. Reaching for the ball just means that your hands are quite a ways from your body - this might not be the case though, difficult to tell from a face-on view. To get your hands higher, I would say keep them more in front of your body - I suspect you're bringing them in behind yourself a little too much... I wouldn't like to say without a down-the-line view though... your feet are maybe a fraction wide as well - if that's a mid-iron I would maybe bring your back foot in closer to your right foot by a few inches...

Hope that helps,

-Ross

Its funny you say that first sentence. I loose my balance alot after I swing, never thought it was how far apart my feet were but thats true, that would cause it. I will do what you said. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for your help Ross, Im going to start working on my stance now. It was a 6 iron I was using too.

alright here is the back view of my swing. I didnt have the net up in front of me so no ball. It was raining and the grass was soaked and the grass was long, lol, other than that. Please give anyfeedback possible especially from you guys who know what they are talking about

slow motion

normal

Hands look to get a bit higher at the top of your backswing in this one which is good - back foot is still not square though... hands are fine from this view at setup, however you appear a bit hunched over. Your backswing is generally quite solid - you appear to take the club away on plane and get to a decent position at the top. The downswing needs a bit of work though - you come at the ball from the outside... try flattening your downswing plane, so when your hands are hip-height on the downswing the club should trace your right forearm and from then on to impact the clubhead should be delivered to the ball directly down your right forearm. You should be able to see that your club is well above your right forearm at this position, which shows how you come across the ball from the outside, creating a fade or slice...

-Ross

wow, your pretty good Ross. Do you take lessons or something, haha. Yea, alot of times I have a slight fade and occasionally I will have side spin on the ball which is from what you said coming in from the outside a litte. I will definitly work on this now that I know some of the corrections I need.

also I dont know how to fix my back from looking hunched over. I naturally hunch a little when I bend over, if I try to straighten it out I think I will get into the S position which isnt good, maybe i just need to lift my head up a little or not bend over as much?

I try and get frequent lessons - it's all well and good getting the odd tip from a website like this, but I find it is anti-productive more often than not, you can easily read too much and try and change too many things at once. Focus on one thing and get it down to a tee before moving on to the next thing... there's no substitute for lessons though, I would recommend them if you aren't getting any already...

Some people are just naturally hunched I guess, I have it a bit thanks to a Computer Science degree - just raising your head up should help improve your posture a bit...

-Ross

yea my degree is computer information systems, although I think ive always done that. I plan on taking some lessons, generally how much do they cost and where do you go? also yea, I looked in the mirror at my stance and if I lift my head a little it gets rid of the hunching over a little at address.

Here in the UK I get lessons at St Andrews Links golf academy - price depends on amount purchased, for me it's £60 a go for a single one hour lesson and £45 if a set of 10 are purchased. I think the rate here is pretty high though given it's the home of golf - I've had lessons at a driving range in my home town for £40 a lesson or £30 if you buy a set of 10. There should be a driving range/golf club or golf academy somewhere in your area where you can get lessons for a reasonable price...

well ive made my stance much closer together and my back less slouchy and I have seen great improvements. I have to conciously think about my back being straight or I automatically slouch before hitting but its almost to the point where I will walk up to the ball and the straight back I automatically go into and not notice it. I have to exagerate it now.

I am now working on getting my shots straight and I am wanting to fix my plane line. I am currently hitting to the right and in the video Im attaching to this post you can see why. I opened the video in V1 basic and drew a plane line on my swing but couldnt save it with the line on there. From what I saw here are the notes;

backswing: club goes under plane line, hands on plane line

downswing: come down over the top of plane line both hands and club

at impact Im pushing it out to the right from open clubface and putting some side spin on it when I release.

I am wondering if Iacas could check out the video and help me with fixing it?

here it is on youtube as well. longer version though

And a private version, too. Don't post your video as private.

Left: Cock the club earlier, feel like Ricky Fowler. Right: Turn the hips on their inclined plane AND the shoulders on theirs. You have almost no hip rotation and your shoulder turn is so so so so flat. More side tilting left. For later...
