I'm looking to cut down an old driver of mine for my 7 year old daughter. Does anyone know how long that should be? I read somewhere that it should be right around the sternum. Is that correct? Thanks

I would recommend going to Dick's sporting goods or other golf store, golf course, etc. and purchasing her a driver, iron, etc. If you just cut down an old driver, it will likely be too heavy for her. Just my .02.

Cutting down the shaft will make it way too stiff for your daughter. I would think a 35" would work but you can check out sets like Founders Clubs. I think they color code their sets for different age levels. Then you'll be able to see what the right specs are.
Finding a new set would be a quicker way to deal with the problem.

As aldef said, your old driver would be way too stiff. Get her a couple of kid clubs, and she'll be set.

Some golf pros suggest younger kids start out with putting and chipping. Also, pediatricians worry about early gradeschoolers hurting their backs if they whip through a lot of full swings.

Good work, dad, for taking the time to get her involved early!

If you go the way of cutting down an old driver. Have the child address the ball and choke down on the club until the toe is slightly up. Make a mark on the shaft a 1/2" above the top hand. Cut it and grip it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with starting a kid out on old clubs. Been doing it for 30 years and have never seen a single problem with it. The kids dont care if the swing weight is off or if its too stiff...... they just want to whack balls and have fun . The technical stuff can come later.

Agree... I plan to do the same for my 7 yr old girl. I intend to measure my own sticks relative to my body, and then cut down some old clubs based on her height and arm length. Shaft stiffness is the least of my concerns.
