Yeah, it will take place in mid-October this year. About a month away. We'll have sixteen people going this year.

What did you like most in reading about it last year? I can tell you who has supplied goodies this year. Our schedule looks something like this: [pre]Day Rounds Facility Format Fri, Oct. 13 2 Salem Glen Better Ball, Southern Point Sat, Oct. 14 2 Tanglewood# Better Ball, Vegas Sun, Oct. 15 1 Greensboro National Singles Matches # = two courses[/pre] As I said, 16 people - 8 on 8, Ryder Cup style, staff versus "the other team" .

I liked Koster personal recap to the cup as well as the normal recap of the tournament.

Who is the other team? golfwrx? <----Just came to my head....

As well I think it would be cool to have a break down of golf equipment at the Cup.

The other team is "others." Some former staff members, some Golf Gods folks, some friends, some people who filled in last year...

Jack Waddell may do a "Bag Drop" column on what people have in their bags, and Dave Koster may do something as well. I don't know... They'll see this thread. I'll point it out to them so they know something is expected. You should try to make next year's. We'll probably do 8-on-8 again.

Thanks!

I definitely plan on doing another writeup of the tournament. It's nothing really planned... just some observations from a numers point of view I may try and prep something ahead of time. Now there's a thought!

Fairways and Greens.

You bet I'm going to do a Bag Drop on the participants. Especially since I'm going to be counting clubs in the bags of the opposing Red team. Just think of me as the Newport Cup's equivalent of the Darrell Survey.

The Waddell Survey. I like it!

P.S. If any Red Teamers have more than 14 clubs, wait until the third hole to tell 'em.

    • Day 52: simulator day. Played Old Head and shot an “80,” which was probably more like a 78 in a non-simulator. Then worked on irons for 15 minutes, and may have found a good feel.
    • Day 14: 2026.01.16 Some swings late in the day to confine trying to embed the hip rotation I'm working on.
    • I don't know what to tell you. You can't test wedges with range balls, and you have a LOT more info to gather before you can begin to really even test anything else, either.
    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
