Simply adding a butt weight would make the swingweight lighter, not heavier. You would need a lighter weight grip if you want the swing weight back up. Or a combination of a lighter grip and added head weight. Or just added head weight with the same grip. I just cut mine down and put on a lighter grip to get to sw. The only thing that really changed was the actual weight of the club.

Yes, I'm well aware a butt weight would make it lighter. You want to set the swingweight to a comfortable level, whether it's ligther or heavier. I prefer a lighter swing weight than most, so when I've had my driver cut down, I've added weight to the butt.

How much did you cut off? Did you put the same grip back on or something lighter/heavier? Are you in the middle c's now?

I cut my Adams Fast 10 driver from 46.125 to about 44.800. The change seemed to alter my launch angle as I'm hitting a lot of low stingers right now. I get at least the same distance and a lot better accuracy so I'm happy with it. Just surprised it changed the trajector

Swingweight is not about being lighter or heavier....... it is about the balance of the club. I can make any driver out there lighter than yours and still have a D5 swing weight if I wanted to.

Ack, how dumb do you guys think I am? Damn, I know what swingweight is, trust me. Taking off or adding weight to the club will affect the swing weight if you don't balance it on the other side.

I never even measured, just put in a custom shaft, then tweaked it till I got it right.

I just reshafted my MX 700 and built it to 45", from stock 45.5". Not exactly an apples to apples comparison because I changed shafts, but I can tell you that the .5" really does make a difference, I hit it on the screws quite a few times last night and hadn't had that kind of success with it with the longer setup. I haven't gotten into messing with swingweight yet in my club building, personally I don't find it to be that big a difference.

The stock stiff 49g reax shaft has a relatively high torque (4.5). So if the OP goes cuts the stock 46.25" to say a 44", would it affect the torque ? Or does it only affect the feeling of the stiffness and swingweight ?

FWIW, I notice when I choke up about 1" on the stock '09 burner, the swing weight feels totally different. So lopping off 2.25" would be a significant jump in feel, no ?

Yes, yes, and yes. Torque will decrease, but not by a huge amount. My driver shaft's stock torque was about 3.8°, so cutting it 2" down (tip) it plays more like a 3.0° or so, or so it feels. It's a nice torque, a bit more than I ideally want, but not bad (my FW wood's torque is 2.8°).

And choking down does change swingweight, as does cutting down.

I did that exact thing with my '09 Burner, I cut down the stock shaft to 44''. Honestly, I felt like the ball flight changed, the feel changed, and I regreted doing it. It ended up being off the charts light after cutting the shaft that much, and I had to add lead tape for feel. I ended buying a different shaft for it (the one in my sig) that had lower torque to begin with, and cut it down to 45''.

Thanks Meddle. I think I'm dumping the stock and trying a UST. How's the Prolaunch feel ? Too early to tell ?

    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn. • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
