As I got in enaged this summer my fiance and I have started to look at honeymoon spots and we have agreed on Hawaii. I know everyone goes to Hawaii for one reason or another but we both have never been. Anyone ever been over their to play golf or stay at a resort on the island? I would love to hear some recommendations.

First off congrats. What time of year or what are the dates of the honeymoon?

I've been on the Big Island (Kona), Oahu and Maui. Personally I think Maui is the best of the three. Everytime I've gone to Maui I've stayed in Kapalua at the Bay Hotel which is connected to the Plantation Course where the Mercedes Championship is held. I also attended the Mercedes this year and it's a great event to attend if you can.

Anyways the Bay Hotel is now torn down and a new hotel/time share resort is being built in its place. So if you can afford it, stay at the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua. Other nice places in Maui are Kaanapali and Lahaina, which along with Kapalua are all very close to each other.

If you end up in Oahu then I recommend Ko Olina which is about 40 minutes west of Honolulu or the Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore. Personally I think staying in Honolulu is overrated and I haven't enjoyed myself much the times I have stayed there. I don't like Honolulu because it's a busy city and personally that's not why I would visit Hawaii. Ko Olina is where the LPGA Fields Open is played and is somewhat of a home course to Michelle Wie, I saw here there a couple days practicing. Now Turtle Bay is where the Big Break V was held and is a beautiful place as well.

Finally, Kona is the best spot if you go to the Big Island as Hilo is kinda dumpy (sorry if that offends anyone). Kona also tends to be a little warmer compared to the other islands.

I could go into more detail if you'd like but I hope this will give you a good start.

Thanks for the reply, wedding will be June 2, 2007 and the honeymood will be the day or two after for 4 or 5 days (June 3-7,8). I would like to stay at a resort and possibley get a package deal with the hotel/golf(me)/spa(wife) all in one. As of right now I have said I will only play once, but everyone knows that will change once it gets close to that time.

Everado or anyone, Have you heard anything about the Resort or Villas in Kapalua? Of the three courses I would assume that the Plantation course is the one to play? I may beable to get a second round in, any suggestions?

Yeah I've heard at the Villas and they look like a very nice place to stay. Yes, definately play the Plantation course but I recommend that you play the Bay or Village course in the morning and then plat the Plantation course on the replay $. Should get the best bang for the buck that way.

I beleive that the Village has been turn into Maui's first private golf course, it could be the Bay, but it is one of them.

I think it's the Village and it will also undergo some remodeling. From my understanding it will be open to all guests of Kapalua Villas, Ritz Carlton, etc.

The Bay Hotel was torn down this year and new time shares and condo's are going up in it's place. A call into Kapalua should help. http://www.kapalua.com/

Aloha from Oahu!

Great to hear you've decided to head this way for your honeymoon. It's great fun and a great place to play golf. I live on Oahu, very touristy and lot's of people, but there are some great courses and resorts, Turtle Bay and Ko' Olina of course are the two choices I would suggest. There are some great courses around KoOlina that you can play if you get bored with that one and both the Fazio and Palmer course at Turtle bay are a blast, it's quite up there on the north shore in the summer and you'll be able to relax. This is the island with pearl harbor, hanauma bay, and my town waikiki.

Plantation Kapalua, nough said. (PS if you're ever there in the winter you play the course, any of them, and there'll be whales breaching in the background, they come to give birth, or maybe to breed??? one of the two in the warm hawaii waters. Great resort too, it's getting a little busier on Maui every year but a lot of fun none the less. Lot's to do all over the island, but I would imagine staying in your room is tops on that list.

On the big island (my personal fav) I suggest http://www.maunakearesort.com/ Mauna Kea. The course weaves through lava fields and the resort is crazy nice. it's a little less tropical and more lava and beach at this resort but a lot less people than the other two islands previously mentioned. This would be my choice on the big island aka Hawaii aka the one with the lava.

Although I've never been to Lanai I hear it's crazy nice. I'm going in January for a little jaunt while we check out the mercedez on maui, just a short little ferry ride to lanai. I hear the four seasons at manele bay is the place to stay and play golf. It's a smaller island and probably the best secluded honeymoon spot. Pricey though. PS Bill Gates rented out the whole island for his honeymoon so you got something to work towards. It's owned by some billionaire, the hp guy or ibm or something like that. Well 98% of it at least.

Kauai is layed back Tropical Rain forest hawaii, you should be safe on the rain factor in the summer though. They have the princeville on the north shore which has a few courses and is really nice and the town of Poipu which has a few courses adjoining some of the big name resort hotels, I think tiger is playing there in two weeks, hyatt, or something like that?

Hope this helps, I'm actually getting married out here on June 9th, 2007, gotta figure out how to get 150 +/-25 friends and family to hawaii, doesn't that sound like fun, so what's helping out two more :)

Aloha,
E

I have been to Hawaii once. Spent a little time on Oahu, too many people. Try looking into Kauai. Smaller island, fewer people. Also has Poipu Bay Course. Home of the PGA Grand slam of golf (The 4 major champions of the year). Its a great spot, with some condo style resorts both beachfront and not beachfront. I have never been to Maui, but I have heard good things about it as well.

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage as well!

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
