So I was watching a little bit of the US open and I noticed that the players seem to move their legs closer together for shorter shots while they kept they're legs farther apart for drives and longer shots. Am I crazy or am I on the right track?

Your correct. I personally put my feet basically together for inside 50 yards.

yeah you are correct. the more club you have the farther your feet should be apart. the same for your ball. the more club you have the farther away the ball should be from your body.

I used to put my feet almost together inside 50, but I started pulling the ball. I'm not entirely certain what I was doing wrong, but moving my feet a little further apart solved the problem.

Use a stance that feels natural to you, but don't overdo it, ie. too wide or too narrow. The body is a fine machine, it can tell how far apart you should position the feet to have the proper balance.
There are some guidelines though.

Too wide: Could be a sign that you are swaying or have poor balance, so you have to widen the stance to stay on your feet.
Too narrow: Don't know what could cause it, if anything could.

Shoulder width with the driver and a bit more narrow as you progress down to the wedges is a good start. Experiment with the width to see what works for you. There is no golden rule here, stance width is individual, like grip and posture. You have to find one that works for you and your swing. It may change as your swing change though.

I never think about my stance width. I put my feet where they want to, depending on what club is in my hands.

i have an overactive lower body and i always have problems turning instead of swaying so it helps me if i keep my feet relatively close togeter.

    • Day 12: did the yardstick putting drill for a bit while watching tv. 
    • Hole 6, 185 uphill par 3, wind out of the right. I hit a 7 iron to 5-FT left of the pin. The ball landed about 185.5 yards. I drained the putt for a birdie, and most likely a skin.  2nd place is more of a best swing made. 110 yard wedge shot, where I did what I wanted in the back swing and downswing.  I hit a 75% partial wedge 95%. It was flushed, flighted, and beautiful to watch fly over the green. 🤣. I will need to redial in the wedges sometime. Since I am making an effort to make my former 3/4 swing length my full swing length. 
    • Is that like "the longest yardstick you can find"? I don't have Airtags but I'd call all of them Airtags too.!
    • Yea, that makes sense.  I remember an Open tournament when they brought out the wind meter one day because balls were being blown around the green. I think it was 45+ sustained, which probably means 60 mph gusts.  I think for the most part, it isn't something that needs to be taken into account.  Also, a golf ball is designed to optimally move through the air. It has better aerodynamics than a sphere.  Thanks for your expertise on this. That makes sense. I know about how wind diminishes the lower in height you go. I didn't know it went near zero at the ground. I deal more with tall structures (utility poles), and we have to take into account height and impacts of wind on the pole. A bit of experience, but wasn't sure how close to zero, non-impactful it was on the golf ball on the ground. 
    • Day 2 (7 Aug 25) - More work on tempo with mid-irons, moved to wedges for the balance of the drill.
