Suggesting a 3-wood for an absolute beginner is hating the driver? That's a helluva leap there young man.

Most people say to hit a 3W instead of a driver.

I don't see why, if you can hit a 3W you can hit a Driver. A driver has a much more forgiving face than a 3W. It has a longer shaft and less loft sure, but it has a massive sweet spot. The only problem is people try to rip a driver while they'll swing normally with a 3W.

You keep hitting that driver, James, but if I was just starting out (and know what I know now), I'd get a driver in about year 3. I mashed the face of my first driver because I couldn't hit the sweet spot. Even though I was money with the 3 and 5 wood, and they went about the same distance, if the hole was longer than 350, it was a driver shot. The driver did get more roll and it was better on windy days, but it was also more likely to end up in the trees.

BTW, golf ball manufacturers promote beginners hitting driver too - does that tell you anything?

back in your day you were hitting wooden clubs eh?

Drivers can be easy to hit, most people practice a lot with them anyway.

I don't want to get between the pissing match here, but I do want to suggest that beginners might have a little more success with the Driver if they weren't dead set on having to have a 9* loft Xtra stiff flex Driver. I'm sure those factors add to the inconsistency....

yeah, higher lofted drivers are easy to hit.

As you said already most people think they need a 9* stiff driver.

I play on a 12* regular myself.

But My **** is already 10 inches so I guess I don't feel the need to prove myself

12 degrees is basically a 2 wood or a strong 3-wood.

ok? It'll be a year or two before I upgrade, and I'll do nothing but get a 10.5...

Do whatever you want mate - I was saying what I'd do. If you want to hit the same driver as Phil, it's your perogative. Fill your boots and fill your bag with balls and off ya go.

lol, no sweat....when I get to about a 6 I'll probably be ready for a 9.5. But until then I prefer smooth and easy.....

I think that's what you should probably be hitting. I've read where that Cobra is super long and super forgiving - it's almost like you're cheating with that in the bag.

And Nick Watney uses 10.5. But nobody seems to have mentioned a fitting as a good route for the OP to take.

and what exactly would a fitting do whent he OP is a complete beginner? nothing.

learn the fundamentals and basics first, get the mechanics of your swing going...then getting a fitting makes sense. if a person doesn't know how to properly swing a damn club, how the hell do you fit someone who doesn't even know how their swing works.

Its always a good idea that the shaft be long enough to reach the club head.
