The last couple of days I've been looking at new (or new to me used) irons. Yesterday a salesguy at Golfsmith said to bring in my 6-Iron and he'd get me set up with some clubs to try in the shop. He said they'd also take in more than one set of clubs. So today I brought in three 6-Irons, one from my old Ram Laser set I used to use a couple of decades ago, one from my Tour Edge Bazooka set I currently use, and one from the Taylor Made Tour Preferred TD set I recently got. The guy there today tried to look them up in their acceptable trade list and not one of them was something they'd take. Apparently I've got dinosaurs for clubs, bummer because I was thinking of trading in two or three of the sets and getting newer. Oh well, decision time on those things.

I still tried out maybe six different irons, TM Burner, Mizuno MX-200(?), a Callaway X22 and the new X24, a Titleist AP1, might have been another one in there as well. I was really hoping I liked the AP1, but it felt just okay, same with the Callaways which I was also hoping to like, same with the Mizuno. And todays winner for what felt best so far was the TM Burner which for some reason I was hoping to not like so much. So much for my pre-conceived notions of what I'd like or dislike.

I'll go back tomorrow or next week and see what other pre-conceived notions I can mess up in my mind. And in the mean time I'm thinking of dumping the Bazookas in the basement and dusting off the Lasers for the next time I get to play a round of golf.

So it goes sometimes.

you won't get any money from the Tour Edge or the Ram...

I'm surprised they didn't take the TM Tour Preferred TD though. But either way, trade in's are usually not worth it. You don't get much from it, better off holding onto it for backup in my opinion.

Still find myself thinking about two sets of used irons the shop had, R7's I think with some flashy graphite shafts. Then they had a set of AP1 Titleists with a mid iron missing.

And is just so happens that this weekend I found three rummage sale clubs that I picked up, a Callaway Big Bertha 1-iron and two Titleist AP1 irons (a 4 and a 5). So I think I'll throw the AP1's in my bag and try them out on the course a few times as opposed to hitting them on the in-store range which should give me a much better idea how they feel to me.

I'm in no hurry.

Buy used on a site like this / craigslist or any other over used in a store
it'll be a lot cheaper
Generally you dont need to spend a lot on irons, buy new wedges / driver, but cheap used irons

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
