I didn't touch a club for 21 days until today. I'm trying, desperately, to let my leg heal, but it just won't. Surgery seems like it could be the only option left. I'll be making an appointment on Monday.

But after those 21 days, I was amazed how much my swing had sort of gone away. I hit maybe 80 balls, and got maybe 20 sweetspots, and 50 so-so shots that went, but weren't pure. I had probably 10 shots that barely broke 20 yards, even a chili dip, and one shank!!! (the shank went a long way though, but a long way right too!) Swinging just felt unnatural.

How long will it take for the swing to go away after a lay off? If I do have surgery, and I can't play for months, how much muscle memory will I lose?

For me after every winter I completely lose my timing. My arms struggle to get into the slot, and I am prone to shanks and just really poor timing. Everything is just a little looser. I guess that probably doesn't help you much, but it's tough to explain. The basics are still there, but every part is the game is just a little sloppy. And you lose some touch with the short clubs, which just takes a little practice to get back.

If you proceed, be sure to also have them remove all that sand from your rectum! :)

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
