Just curious. Do you buy new clubs or used ones from places such as craigslist, ebay etc. I've always been of the opinion that todays $400 hot driver is a $200 bargain a year from now.

The hard part is waiting that year for the price to go down!

I usually try to find some of last year's technology that fits me. And, I tend to play clubs for several years unless they just don't work. (Disobedient clubs get sold off after a few months.)

Also, I go to golf shops to test out what I'm getting. Online OK for a replacement club, but for full sets I prefer the shops.

Same. I'm not really a huge fan of buying clubs online unless I have hit them prior to the purchase. I can't just go on eBay and pick out a new iron set, run my credit card, and head on over to the course tomorrow and play. Sounds like fun, but I may hit them terribly if I don't research them at least a little and try them out before I buy them.

Discounted new clubs or used ones in very good condition are what I get. If online, I stick with established vendors only.

I buy from the the used (pre-owned?) bin often and look for new clubs that are being phased out and on sale. I have to admit sometimes you just can't find what you want and have to fork over the $ for a new and current club or set. But don't do that anymore often than necessary. I don't do very much on-line as I worry about counterfeit clubs and unethical dealers. A buddy of mine had some problems with counterfeit Pings. But I suppose the rule of "if it is too good to be true, it probably is" should apply to all on line purchases. However I also know a lot of golfers that buy on line and don't have problems. They tell me just use some common sense and you'll be OK.

MY whole set up has come from the used section at Golf Galaxy for the most part. I could never bring myself to spend the kind of $$ that brand new quality gof equipment runs. I am perfectly happy with my current equipment, and if/when I change/upgrade in the future, I will buy used again!

I picked up a full set of TaylorMade R7 XDs from Costco. Includes Driver, 3W, 5W, 4H and 5 - PW & SW irons...R flex steel shaft. Graphite on the woods/hybrids. Is $599 a good deal? It appears these first came out in 2006, however a few people I've spoken to indicated it would be a great value. I currently have 855s, however they are stiff shaft and I need something more forgiving. Also have considered Burner Plus, however they are more expensive. Would I be better of buying the newer Burners and newer technology? Any thoughts are appreciated.

NEVER buy new. The depreciation on a club is worse than a toyota.

My club pro showed me his new r9 superdeep tour only with aldila's RIP shaft(a 400$ upgrade according to him...). Apparently the whole setup would be worth 800$ or so. So i went home & found one online for 200$. Shipped. Of course he probably got it for free, but even a month after release most models just plummet. There is few companies or models that hold resale value for long. 3 best value comapnies in terms of quick price drops-adams, cleveland & wilson staff. Callaway & TM are dropping quicker than they used to as well. Wilson staff irons are the most underated on the market. Brand new CI7s for 150$ is pretty frickin sweet. Recent Titleist irons & most Ping clubs seem to hold their resale fairly well.

600$ sounds pretty good for that setup. But if you cannot handle the shafts then your value goes through the floor. You could probably flog them off on ebay for that much or more or try to swap for another full set, but why bother.

When I was first starting to play, I bought a lot of stuff from Ebay, used bins at shops, etc. I didn't want to waste my money buying the wrong new clubs. As I've played more golf and learned enough to know what to buy, I've started buying new clubs. With my driver, I paid full price a few years ago when TM was offering a free hybrid with the driver purchase. Best decision I ever made as my R7 460 and 25* TM Rescue Dual have been my favorite clubs since. Recently, I finally got fitted and bought new irons and wedges. It's nice to play with irons that fit (I'm not built for off the rack). I'd buy a wood or driver used and online if they didn't need to be fit but I'd try to find one locally to hit first.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
