My 3&5 Irons do not go anywhere. Literally, maybe 100 yards at most. So I usually use my 2&3 hybrids, but I dont like using them all the time (in the rough). My uncle has told me to use the same swing as I do with my lob wedge, as in hitting down on the ball, but it isnt working for me. Any ideas/tips?

see, this is why i don't like the advice ''hit down with your irons'' for most people, because you're not really hitting down with any of them, you should be hitting through with them them. i like to think i'm dragging the clubface through the hitting area and letting it go, gravity takes care of the hitting down part. put the ball farther up in your stance and try to sweep your club through the ball towards the target, i think this will help.

Yeah you gotta get that weight forward but you dont want to swing harder you just gotta be more accurate
Lot of people think they need to swing harder to get a 3 iron in the air and end up hitting it thin or picking it

Make a full shoulder turn, swing with purpose / confidence, and don't take much (if any) turf. Practice on a low tee for awhile (like teeing off with them on short par 4s). You gotta swing in balance but still commit to the shot - same as with a driver. Tell your uncle . . . nah, just ignore your uncle.

How do you maintain an 11 handicap hitting longer irons 100 yards? Your uncle is giving you bad advice. You hit down on the ball with every iron, but not with the same swing plane. A lob wedge uses the most vertical swing plane, the 3 iron a much flatter one. Try hitting the 3 and 5 with the flattest planes you can manage. Even try a mirror to help get there.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
