Well after a good round yesterday ballstriking wise, I played today and I hit my irons well but my driving was awful, I had a high hook everytime, it felt as though I was hitting an iron, it feels like I hit it solid but it doesnt go along way, I know its hard to know whats wrong without seeing it, but any suggestions or tips? This is probably nonsense but I have a stiff shaft maybe I need XS? I read up on the symptoms of a shaft not stiff enough and it seems to suit my problems, Im fit, 6f and dont weigh alot though but I do go after it, but is Xs just for tour pros? About 2 years ago my swing speed was 107 but Ive grown abit and have a completely different swing, I my pw 145, 9i 160, 8i 165-170, 7i 175-180

Thx in advance

You should have your swing speed checked again before you go switching shafts, especially from stiff to extra stiff. That said, I think you need to go back to the fundamentals, starting with your address and foot positioning and working up to your swing. Are you doing anything different? If that high hook just suddenly started to happen (and your post makes me believe that it did), then I am inclined to believe that your problem is something other than the driver.

Sorry forgot to say Im just back after 5 months of not playing, my irons are way better than they have ever been, Im doing a bit of work on my set up coincidently, its just my driver swing feels good and the hit feels solid but the flight is strange

You could be going in-out and side spinning the ball.

Make sure your swing plane isn't too flat

It might be a bit flat but would that not effect my iron play if it was? because I seen to be hitting it quite pure at the moment, Ive never had a high hook in my life, very strange....

Quick question not worth another thread, should the hands be ahead of the ball when hitting the driver?

How many times did you play after 5 month lay off?

If you want to rebuild your swing, this is a great opportunity for you. Otherwise, you will get your old swing back pretty soon.

3 times now, if the driving was good then I could do some serious scoring but the driving is just killing me and my confidence

Irons and woods are completely different swings. I know I swing flatter with my driver than my irons

Well, for me, all I do is play with it until I find a good spot and use that.

Another thing I do when I get the hooks is put a tee right in front of the ball about a foot, and when I swing, I try and make the clubhead go right over the tee.

Ok, any tips to get a better plane going with the driver?

Personally, I think that with all the technology out there (equipment and on the teaching side) the driver is good place to get professional help. With iron swings, as long as you're generating clubhead speed, you can compensate for slight swing flaws during a swing and still get a pretty good strike on the ball. It's pretty easy to make a setup or swing adjustment with irons and get things back on track. With a driver though, everything is going at such a faster speed (your body parts, the club head, and the ball) that slight errors are magnified. It really nice to see a driver swing frame by frame before and after making some minor tweaks. There's always the old standby "ball flight" to use for trouble shooting, but for the driver, taking advantage of 2010 technology is a no brainer.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
