My game off the tee is killing me. The funny thing is that this has always been my biggest weakness. I've been tracking my stats for the last 2 years (the length of time I've been actively playing since I basically quit after getting married 15 years ago) and my accuracy off the tee has actually decreased over that 2 year period. Statistically speaking right now it's at an all time low. The last 2 weeks my percentage of fairways hit is 41%, for the 20 scores in my index its at 51%, for the total 2 years of data it's at 59%. Over this same period my handicap has steadily trended down too, so my worsening performance off the tee is offset by my improved performance everywhere else. I would say overall this situation has always been constant in my game since I started playing as a kid. Poor performance off the tee, decent scrambling ability to get the ball back into play, and fairly solid performance putting.

What to do? I've had a few lessons but nothing that impressed me. All pretty much what I already know and nothing that gave me anything definitive to do off the tee that improved that stat. I do believe that the right instructor (read: good) could help, but finding that person has so far be elusive. Working on this on my own obviously isn't working. I suppose what I need to do is interview all of the available teaching pros in my area and see which one impresses me the most and then see what they are capable of doing. I would like to use video, so that can be a criteria I can use to pair down the field of teaching pros. Any other ideas for finding someone to help or something I could do on my own?

I'm really frustrated by this and know I'm capable of improving this one stuborn stat. My swing fault is coming over the top on the down swing giving me an outside in swing path that naturally produces a pull fade. I'm okay with playing a pull fade, but the problem is that when I'm struggling (read: obviously at least 50% of the time) that pull fade becomes a slice and that is extremely hard to play and takes a huge amount of distance off my shots. When I manage to connect without that OTT move I get 260yds+ with the driver. That's a number I would love to be able to count on, but right now I just as often find myself playing a strong fade that looks more like 220yds and requires a whole lot of fairway just to keep it in play.

Make sure you're not overswinging on your backswing. This can lead to grip loosening and/or looping the club with R hand on downswing. Loop R usually results in OOT with me.

Just something to consider.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Just a thought. Have you tried slow motion swings with your driver? I mean, really slow? All the rough edges stand out when you do that, and if something "just doesn't feel right," chances are it's not. With a normal-speed swing, we can blow by our mistakes too quickly to notice them.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
