At the range today, I noticed that almost all my iron shots were deeper in the toe. The direction of the divot was fine...either a little right or straight but of course, toe contact and toe deep divots will leave every ball out right and turning right.

Anyway, what are some things that could cause toe deep divots? Is it as simple as getting the lie angles adjusted on my irons? My swing is naturally steep so after battling this for a while I'm leaning toward club-fitting unless its something like dropping my back shoulder too much on the downswing or changing my spine angle.

Lie angle, that's it.

That's not it, no.

You can have a swing fault that leads to the toe (or the heel) being down through impact. IF the clubs are properly fit - not a bad lie angle - then it's a swing flaw.

If they weren't fitted it's probably a bad lie angle. Or the clubs are too short for you. I'd look into one of those two things first before I looked into swing faults (hands too high through impact can lead to toe down).

thanks Iacas. I do grip down a little bit(feels more comfortable for me than holding the end of the club) but I think I'm gonna check into getting things adjusted for me

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
