I just bought new X22 Tours with ProjectX 5.5's. I am taking huge divots (after the ball, but bigger than other people at the range). I'm 5'7 and never needed to get my clubs fit before, but I'm thinking I may need to now. I've noticed since doing this video that my shaft flexes a ton before impact... do I need a stiffer shaft perhaps?

Quick swing vid:

Should my shaft flex this much before impact?

Even par through 9 is my best.  I don't even want to think about what was my worst.

Do you have any idea what your swing speed is? I think that last image is mostly an illusion..

This is Iacas's swing I'm assuming? This is how the shaft flexing ought to look but maybe a little less. Whoever that is is making that "steel" look like a piece of rubber. What I'm getting at is, the last image is mostly an illusion so I wouldn't pay much attention to that.

its not an illusion, from what i know it means that he is releasing his wrists to early and coming over the ball

The image is captured from top to bottom, giving the illusion of such an exaggerated forward bending of the shaft, as iacas has pointed out in other posts.

It's an illusion, the camera takes the picture in sequenced rows (for lack of a better technical explanation) so because the shaft is moving at a pretty high rate of speed, the lag between capturing those rows causes it to render the shaft a bit skewed. That looks to be about an 8iron, go ahead and try to bend one anywhere near that much...it's just not possible and that's with the head being held statically.

Some cameras render the shaft forward like that. In that case it's an illusion because, as some have mentioned, the "rows" of pixels are recorded top to bottom. Flip your camera upside down and you'll get a different look.

You'll note that my camera shows the opposite - the clubhead BEHIND, not kicking in front of the shaft. My camera doesn't record video that way (I can record upside down and it looks the same - not that I use that camera anymore).

Just think about it, if a shaft would actually look like this at impact - you would have almost zero power transfer into the ball and your club would be uplofted instead of delofted, you would probably blade most of your balls and the rest would go nowhere.

Normal speed cameras are pretty much useless for looking at impact situations where your hands/clubhead and so on is positioned imo due to impact speed way too high compared to recorded frames per second.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
