Here's the simplest version of what many others have said. Make absolutely sure your next shot is not in trouble. That way you lose one stroke, not two, or three, or four..........

Not trying to be a wise guy, but back in the day weren't hybrids and woods known as "rescue" clubs? As a matter of fact "rescue" is even the brand name used by Taylormade for their hybrids. Weren't hybrids introduced as go-to clubs for hitting out of the rough? Now all you guys are saying "use a mid-iron from the rough."

IMO hybrid/rescue clubs are rescue in the sense that they can help you get a long iron distance from a good to moderately bad lie in the rough, where you might have trouble using a long iron. From ratty, tangly stuff, you're not looking for a long iron, you're hoping to get out with a short iron. The head of a hybrid is not ideal for cutting through lots of grass or fescue or what-not. In those situations, your best bet is a wedge or short iron that will let you cut down into the mess to reach the ball --- a hybrid will just bounce off the tangles high up.
