Wife and I are flying to Idaho for some golf. I have never flown with my clubs before. Any recommendation for a travel bag? Hard-sided, soft-sided, any particular brand, etc?

Thanks!

I don't have a bag recommendation, but I would suggest you verify with the airline the cost of taking your clubs. My friend was told it would be an additional $100 to take his clubs each way on a discount airline because of the weight and other bags they checked. Minimally you might want to opt for a soft-side just to reduce the additional weight, leave any extra clubs home, and purchase balls at your destination if the fees for overweight bags are high.

We are traveling southwest; they say golf bags fall under their bags-fly-free program. I just wondered what most suggested. I was also wondering about the hybrid type bag?

Some people are just going to say use your normal bag, but please go buy a "good" travel bag!

You should be looking for somthing that has a hard case so the shafts can not get snaped. Then it does not really matter about the head of the golf bag, just make sure it has padding around it. Then to make sure your clubs don't get dints/bag chatter. Wrap a towel around them inside the bag.
1 last thing, LOCK EVERY POUCH/POCKET ON THE BAG! My dad laughed at me when I said this, when we got off the plane 2 doz pro v's were gorne from his bag.... But mine were still there :P

I think my bag is Eagle and Birdies and ive been on many long oversea's flights with it and never had a problem.

I've owned one of those SKB hard case and didn't like the size so I bought the Club Glove travel back. I've had it for over 12 years and have taken it on a few trips to Florida and South Carolina. It's durable and has enough pockets for shoes and accessories. It's a bit more than the other similar models though.

Thanks for all the info...anyone use the hybrid type that doubles as a hard case and an actual golf bag when you remove the hard top?

I got the OGIO Straight Jacket golf bag for our trip to Hawaii. Thing is fantastic. Tons of room for my stand bag, shoes, clothes. I put a Stiff Arm in there to protect the clubs and that was it. The wheels made a huge difference too rolling through airports and to rental cars. Highly recommended.

I second the Club Glove . They're a great bag, and better priced than some of the alternative. Lots of room for shoes, and extra clothes.

There's a reason it's the number 1 bag on the PGA Tour and other tours... they're very durable and travel really well.

Cheers, Allan

From the Southwest website:
Golf clubs in a hooded or soft-sided golf bag are conditionally accepted. Golf clubs that are transported in a hard, plastic travel case should be tagged with a regular tag. Golf equipment includes golf clubs, golf balls, and golf shoes, contained in one bag.

This sounds a lot like Delta's policy. They don't charge extra for clubs, as long as they weigh less than 50 lbs., but they encourage you to use a hard-shell travel case. On Delta, you need to sign a limited release form if you transport your clubs in a soft-side case.

I ended up getting the SKB bag. It just seemed the most secure for the precious cargo!
