Hey guys, I'm from Somerset in the UK and would appreciate it if you could give me some tips on my swing. I hope that these videos are good enough to get a good view of my swing.

My main problem is controlling the direction of my shots. Some go left, some go right. Some fade, some draw.

One thing I do not do is line the shot up in anyway before I approach the ball. Are there any special techniques in order to line the shot up correctly?

The videos I have are of a 7 Iron and my Driver.

thanks tom

I am just commenting based on your 7iron swing.

You actually seem to have a pretty decent swing. The first thing I noticed is that you take the club way too far inside and you start the swing with your wrist/arms.

Also, try square up your feet.

And develop a pre-shot routine that you can duplicate for every shot that includes alignment. I would stand behind the ball hold the club up to your target and pick out a spot two to three inches in front as your aiming point.

thanks for the tips.

In terms of coming way to far inside, does this result in a flat swing? as i get the feeling when im watching the video that my hands are not high enough at the top. Instead of starting the swing with my arms/wrist should this be done with the rotation of the shoulders? Will this help prevent bringing it inside?

First, your swing plane is very nice.

First thing I notice is your take away. It looks like you break your wrists right off the ball which is the reason why you feel you are flat or your hands are too low. Gary Player said the first two feet of the swing should all be one piece. Basically this means that you shouldn't be setting your wrists until your hands reach hip or belt level depending on your height. Then continue your backswing from there. The result should be higher hands at the top of the backswing. From there begin the downswing from the same position to enable a swing down the line. There also may be some flipping but that could be resolved by the proper wrist set on the takeaway.

thanks for that alo1984, ill take some more video's when i next visit the range after taking in your comments. Hopefully we can then see an improvement on the first two feet of the swing. Does this mean I should keep my wrists completely set untill I rotate my shoulders till the club is at hip height and then break the wrists? (hope that makes sense).

Yes, that is exactly what I mean. It will allow for a more natural wrist set. Don't think too much about breaking your wrists, rather allowing the wrists to set naturally from the one piece takeaway.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
