I've often heard of the cracking whip downswing analogy. Can someone comment on where and how this is done in the swing?

This refers to the transition. Just like a 'crack the whip action', the left hip begins it's forward and rotational part of the downswing while the club head is still on it's way to the top. Above all, this is a smooth motion - not a yank.

The left hip pulls the passive but relatively strait left arm into the swing. The left arm falls strait down and the left shoulder is used to resist any forces to pull the left arm over the line. The right arm and right hip collapse like an accordion but this is because of the forces exerted by the left hip while the left shoulder is keeping the left arm on plane. You do nothing with the right arm or right hip. The power of the swing is from the left leg and left hip pulling the left arm. It is in the transition of this swing method where the cracking of the whip comes to into play.

That would work. I've done this with the right side also but anyways...I just like to add, you have to be very very relax with the whole body. The key to me is timing.when you are cracking the hip,you go boom boom two suddle quick motion,you know like not a lot of movement. Basically what I do is again I relax my body and than I just apply a quick turn of the shoulder on the backswing until it gets to about 1/2 to 3/4 backswing where the right arm might not even flex much and than another quick joint with the hip so that I get my hip at slightly past the starting position. The upper body will reconnect with the hip after the hip gets to impact position. Again like boom boom. ***Faster ***you crack your hip, the faster your club head speed is. It is exactly like cracking a whip,except try to think of your upper body as the tip and your hip is the handle.

Oh Btw, when my timing is good, even though I just try to make a 3/4 backswing, I feel like when my hip is already to impact position, the hands do get to back into full backswing posittion.It feels like there is huge amount of seperation between the arms and shoulder and the hiip created by the change in direction, and hence give you lots of easy club head speed.BUT honestly fun to play around with,but not a practical swing,maybe for the kids,you know like Tiger pre-harmon. Timing is really a biach.

    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭

    • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
