I have tickets to Friday's round at Whistling Straits. I have never attended a PGA Championship before and was wondering if the board here could help me with the do's and don'ts of being at a venue during tournament play. Please.

I understand no cell phones, no cameras. Is that true, not even the little cameras that fit in your pocket?

What about my wife's purse?

A back pack with food/water in it?

Extra shirts or long sleeve shirt in the back pack?

From what little I can find on the internet so far, it seems like you can't get anything through the tournament gates. True/False?

Someone with experience here, please respond.

Thank you kindly.

From the PGA Championship spectator policies:

PROHIBITED ITEMS
The items listed below are strictly prohibited on
the grounds of Whistling Straits. All bags will be
searched upon entering the Championship.
• All personal electronics such as cell phones
(including camera phones), portable email devices,
hand-held games, radios, televisions (including handheld),
iPods, etc.
• All oversized chairs with wide arm rests (small, portable/
folding chairs are permitted).
• Weapons of any kind (regardless of permit).
• Bikes, coolers, ladders, milk crates, signs, posters,
banners, dogs and other pets.
• Alcoholic Beverages.
Please leave all prohibited items in your vehicle as they
will not be permitted at the Championship.

Also, as far as I know backpacks are allowed. Can't find much info on food (I would assume it's prohibited), and water can be brought in as long as the bottles are Aquafina labels, otherwise the labels have to be torn off.

No problem. :) Cameras would've been allowed through yesterday, but not during the Championship tournament itself.

Why is that? I mean (as a golfer and watcher of TV golf) I understand "clickity, click" right behind Tiger or Mick ... but what about a casual shot of them coming onto the green or walking the fairway? I mean, I can go to a football game or baseball game and flash pictures of the atheletes "performing." Other than the click, click right near them, I don't understand the no camera rule.

At every tournament and Major, the guidelines always say no cameras, but when you watch it you always see people with them in the crowd.Chances are you might sneak a small one in if you really wanted to.
A great shot is when you go for it and pull it off. A smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it. ~ Phil Mickelson.

Except that then you're risking having to head all the way back to your car to put it back (if you can even return?), or having them seize it. I don't know their procedures if a camera is spotted, even if it doesn't interfere with play.

I think if you're caught with a camera, chances are you get booted.

They don't want any chance of non-pros firing the flash or a click at the wrong time. Similarly, cell phones/pagers are not allowed for similar reasons. They also want to control information flow out of the tournament and keep control over the publicity for the actual event.

At the US Open, small packs were allowed. There was some rule in the booklet that came with my ticket, it was something like smaller than 8x8x8 inches in its natural state (i.e., you can't cram it into that space).

In the bag:

You would think that wouldnt be a problem but you got a bunch of idiots out there who would rather go home with 3000 photos then actually enjoy the game. People are too diserspectful as a whole to trust them to not disturb the golfers.

It's a shame but... It is what it is. As far as the get in the hole thing from Par 5's. I bet Tiger wants to kill that guy. That's the stupidest thing

Didn't Tiger recently say he finds the 'GET IN THE HOLE!' guy more annoying than the sound of the Vuvuzela ?That says a lot.

I'll add a couple... don't yell GET IN THE HOLE when they hit their tee shot on the 630 yard par 5, it makes you look like a tool. Don't wear golf shoes... you're WATCHING, not PLAYING. I hate people who wear golf shoes to WATCH a golf tournament.

Being from the area, they've actually been advocating that spectators wear golf shoes while watching. Moving around alongside the holes yields many difficult slopes to navigate.

do you wear skates to watch a hockey game? Or spikes to watch a ballgame?

Yes, when you have situations like this happening all day at Whistling Straits.

    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.

    • Thanks man, sometimes it’s hard to improve bc when I’m not feeling comfortable I don’t like practicing bc I get frustrated. Any advice?
