I am thinking of buying a Scotty newport 2 and as soon as I get it I am sending it to the custom shop.
So I've done some research and i cant exactly figure it out. Is the teryllium finish a gloss black or does it look more like car oil spilled in a puddle because I don't want to waste the extra 50 is it's just a black finish.
Also, what makes a Scotty "for tour use only" because I would like to customize the one I get so it is a "tour use only" club.

Teryllium does not describe a finish Scotty offers, it is the copper alloy he uses in the face insert of some of the putters he makes.

Also, unless you are on tour, or you purcahase one on ebay, you will never get a FTUO putter from scotty.

The finish on the TeI3 putter has a high gloss black, oil can finish. Care must be taken with the finish as moisture will cause the finish to pit if left unattended. The teryllium insert as the posters above me explained, is made of copper alloy which can easily scar. I bought one new back in '97 and played with it for thru 2003, which is starting to show it's age. The nice black gloss finish has been worn on the bottom of the putter, the insert has multiple pits and scratches so I will probably need to send it in for a complete refinish which is around $175.

thank you very much I'm a Scotty newb considering I've never owned one before.

How much do you guys think a FTUO putter would cost and what are the differences

First things first, the finish on the TeI3 model is known as Black Pearl and is a very shiny/glossy black finish. The finish was used only on the TeI3 model and was applied by a third party, a company know as Black Oxide Services (BOS). The Scotty Cameron Custom Shop will NOT refinish a putter in Black Pearl; the only choices for a TeI3 are either Charcoal Mist or Pro Platinum. If you choose Pro Platinum, they insert will be coverd with the PP finish as well. You can always send a TeI3 to BOS on your own and have them restore it (for a lot cheaper than the Custom Shop), but if you do the you won't get all the options the Custom Shop offers.

As for "Tour" SC putters, the vast majority of them were never nor will they ever be used by a pro on tour. Most "Tour" putters are purchased through Titleist distributors by collectors as a true custom putter. Second-hand Tour putters can be had for as "cheap" as $500-600 and can go up for $5,000 and over.

msd: Thanks for the info...I think I will send my TeI3 to BOS. One of my local golf shops recommended that I send my putter to Scotty Cameron but I don't want the Pro Platinum finish. The prices on BOS' restoration is much more reasonable.

I'll take some before and after picture and post it once it gets restored.

The Teryllium putter had a Black Oxide finish. We can restore your putter back to original or to the Pro Platinum. The black oxide is a higher maintenance finish that needs to be kept dry and oiled down after use. The Pro Platinum is a silver plating that is much lower maintenance and not as prone to rusting. Restoration back to original is 145.00 and to Pro Platinum is 175.00. Thanks Lauren

I'm not sure exactly who at Titleist/Scotty Cameron responded to that, but I'm am absolutely 100% sure that the Scotty Cameron Custom Shop can

NOT restore a TeI3 with it's original finish. I had the Custom Shop restore my TeI3 Newport, and I can guarantee you that they can't do so. There are a ton of discussions on this topic over at TCC (The Cameron Collector), and the Custom Shop's own website says so as well.

so basically i cant get an oil can finnish

interesting thread--after some Googling, I didn't realize "Teryllium" isn't a generic material or compound, but just a trademarked name by Scotty Cameron (like a glistening drop of "Retsyn" by the makers of Certs). Someone at Pixar years ago must have been a Scotty fan, based on the Buzz Lightyear quote from the original Toy Story saying his wings were made from a Terillium-Carbonic Alloy ("and I CAN fly").

just a little tangent...i have no opinion about the actual putter!

The Custom Shop will only either restore your putter with its original finish or the Pro Platinum finish. Also, the PP finish cannot be applied to stainless steel putters. Since the CS can't use the Black Pearl finish that your TeI3 originally had, you only options are to go with the Charcoal Mist finish or the PP finish.

All this is outlined on the Scotty Cameron website .

msd is correct.... Charcoal Mist or Pro Platinum are your only choices. If you go with a finish applied by another company, the resale value of the putter is diminished.

The putter in my avatar is a Scotty Cameron Studio Design 2.. I love it. My choices for a refinish at Scotty's Custom Shop are restore to the original Black Oxide finish or Pro Platinum.
