I only use it when I'm short sided but what I do is use a lot of wrists and kind of pop the ball by dropping the club on the back of it. Provides a lot of check and little release. The clubhead barely moves past the original ball position for me.

When I'm at the practice range early enough in the morning that I have the place to myself, I'll take a small bucket of balls and scatter them just off the green - up to about 20 yards away - including in the bunker and varying lengths of rough. I'll pick a hole on the green and hit all the balls with just one club. Then I do it again with different club. It's pretty clear that some shots look good and can be brilliant, but at a higher risk - not to say those shots won't get used on the course though, since I'm not usually playing for anything more than fun.
