Yesterday was my buddys first ever time to a golf course. He has been going to the range for about the last two weeks. When we get to first tee he says I stink so i hope you dont mind. I told him no big deal we were only out to have fun. First hole is a dogleg right par 4. I hit driver about 225 right down middle of fairway and he just goes wow how do you hit it so far. Im thinking ok wow how bad is he really (not that it mattered hes a good friend I play hockey with and we were just out to have fun but still). he then tees off 150 with a little slice barley right rough. ends up shoting a 6. Im like your not that bad bro. Next hole another dogleg right he shots a 7 so again good hole man. nest hole is a par three 158yrds up hill, he hits green and pars hole. wow hes really not that bad. we then continue the front nine. when we get to turn he asks me if I want to bet him Im like whats the catch you shot a 64 i shot a 48 I know hes not dumb so there has got to be a catch. So he tells me he wants me to play with just one club for nine holes. So I say what the hey its 10 bucks and it will be fun.

hole 10, par 4, shot bogey
hole 11, par 4 shot double
hole 12, par 3 shot bogey
hoel 13 par 5 shot bogey
hole 14 par 4 shot triple
hole 15 par 3 shot double
hoel 16 par 4 shot par
hole 17 par 5 shot quad
hole 18 par 4 shot double

All in all I was suprised how decent i did with only one triple and one quad. I hit my 5 iron apporx 185 so I was good off tee and had many half swings into green i was suprised how quick ball jumps off club trying to chip with a 5 iron tho. If you have never tried to play with one club I suggest you give it a try some day it was actually pretty fun and i won by 3 strokes.

What course did you play? I have been vacationing this week. I played at Airco Tuesday and Wednesday, then played Rocky Point today. I was in 80's all week and dropped three points off my HCI.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

Did you play with a 5 iron + a putter, or just 5 iron?

just a 5 iron. luckly i dint get in any sand i always played well away from it. I figured it would be easier to be 20 yrds left then in the sand. but yeah putting wasnt to hard actually

About 15 years ago I got whipped by a guy practicing for a local one club tournament. It was really sad how easily he cleaned my clock using only a 5 iron and I had all 14 clubs. He kicked my partners butt too but that still does not make me feel any better. I always wanted to try 18 with only one club but never wanted to waste the $ on greens fees. My local par 3 course has half price fees (7.50) on Mondays before 5 so perhaps I'll finally try it now that you have jogged my memory, but I think I will use a 7 iron.

I am def going to do it again with my 7 iron. I noticed it was really really hard on shots inside of about 80yrds.

interesting choice....I think I would take my 19* hybrid as my only club. It would be a tough call between that and a 7 iron.

I think this would be a good idea for the next Sandtrap unoficial tournament. My choice would be my 8 iron. I know I would be giving up distance, but I have such confidence it the club that I know most of my shots would be straight. Only problem is, I still can't bump and run that club.

Lol Diamond Hill. I drove #1, #10, and #11 last Sunday. Your better off being in the "rough" than the fairway on that course. Ill play with u guys next time Im down.

So is a 7 iron the perfect choice in club for the one club round, or is the movie tin cup a factor? I have always wanted to do this. Maybe a 7 iron and a lob wedge would be fun.

Haven't done just one club, however I've done a "any 3 clubs game". Great fun and and excellent drill. It really teaches you how to manipulate your clubs and a real eye opener.

I would like to add to this thread. If you can only play with 3 clubs which would you choose?

For me it depends, on my home course I would go FW3 (2nd best distance[must have on 14 of the 18 holes] and usuable on FW) 7i, and PW (or Putter as I never tried putting without a putter so I dont know how possible it is.)

On my 3-par its 5i, 7i, PW (replace the 5i if putting is too hard without the putter).

putting wasnt actually hard at all with the 5 iron. Some of time when im playing my normal rounds ill just putt with my 60* so i dont have to walk back to the cart to grab my putter if I put it fairly close. lol
