LPGA Players have an average swing speed of 94 mph, yet they use low lofted driver. Most of them are using 9.5 degree or even 8.5 degree. Are these drivers launch monitored for distance or these lofts are just preference?

LPGA players hit way up on the ball to get more distance and a perfect launch angle because their swing speeds are so low.

PGA tour players hit about 3 degrees down on it to get more control because they basically use the same swing they use for their irons which adds more consistency. Hence they have higher lofted drivers.

For example if you compare Phil and Tigers distance off the tee, Phil hits it past Tiger although Tigers swing speed is a lot higher than Phils when he really goes after it. That´s because Phil tees it up high and hits up on it to maximize distance and Tiger goes more for control and hits down on it.

Tiger is a very good driver of the golf ball while Phil barely hits 50% of his fairways.

(Tiger was ranked 9th for total driving in 2009 and Phil was T 108th)

Golf is a game in which the ball always lies poorly and the player always lies well.

Tiger is a good driver of the ball? To me he hits it sideways with his driver, hence why he hits so many 3 woods and 2 irons off the tee.

I dont know what stats you are looking at, but at Driving accuracy he is 64 % which is 83 and total driving (for distance + accuracy) he is about the same rank - and considering that he only takes out the big stick when he absolutly has to, i don´t think you can call Woods a good driver .. of the ball!

And yes, the difference why LPGA plays such low lofted drivers is cuz they hit up on it (they had the stats here somewhere) and the men hit down.

We mortals are also taught to hit on the upswing. Should we copy what the LPGA are using?

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
