Rules question...

I want to check and make sure a ruling I made this weekend was correct:

A tee shot this weekend left me in pretty bad shape far left of my fairway. My second shot crossed the fairway into heavy woods. It just so happened that this section of woods is red staked and even has the border outlined with a red spray painted line. I never found my ball but I was "virtually" certain that my ball was somewhere inside the red staked boundry. I took a drop at the point of where I saw my ball enter the hazard added a one stroke penalty and hit my fourth shot back into the fairway and finished the hole. Did I do this correctly?
