I was at the golf shop earlier today looking for some irons and decided to test out a few 6 irons. My average swing speed was 87mph (90mph w/ hybrid mzuno 6 iron).

Does anyone know what this equates to w/ a driver? Also, what shaft stiffness should I be using, I currently have regular shafts on all my clubs.

I think you can add about 10 mph to that to approximate your driver SS.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

You should be fitted for DGSL300, PX 5.5, or KBS Tour Stiff. Of course this is just by your swing speed numbers so it may not be the best fit. You should try some of those out and see how they "feel". I have a similar swing speed to yours and I was fitted for those recently by the Mizuno guy but I really don't mind my DGS300's. I definitely hit the PX 5.5 Flighted's further than my DGS300's but I like the sturdy feel of the DGS300's over the whippy feel in the PX 5.5's.

As to driver SS, I think you should be right around 100 mph which is what I am at. So most OEM stiff shafts should be okay for you. You could benefit from stiff shafts by being able to control your shots better but it might take some time to get used to the weight/stiffness.

Good luck.

I have very similar swing speeds. I swing my irons in the upper 80's and my driver in the lower 100's (104 average last time I checked). I use stiff shafts on all my clubs and they perform optimally. I would suggest the same for you, but your swing and mine are not identical. For the best results, go back to the shop and try out different flexes and see what works for you.

If you are already playing your best with your regular shafts, there is no need to switch. If you feel like they are too whippy or uncontrollable, stiff is probably your best option.

by "DGSL300, PX 5.5, or KBS Tour Stiff" i'm assuming you are referring to shafts (sorry, i haven't done much research when it comes to equipment but starting to since i'm getting more serious w/ golf).

I'll keep those shafts in mind. Also, a few other members recommended Mzuno or Ping irons, so at least i've narrowed my search down to Ping or Mzuno stiff shaft irons. the search continues...

As my swing is developing, i do feel the reg shafts being a bit whippy. I'll have to go back to the golf shop and compare reg and stiff flex shafts.

Yeah they are stiff shafts that are a bit lighter and should fit your swing speed pretty well but who knows. I wasn't fitted for my irons and I like DGS300's and PX6.0's. I guess I like everything on the stiffer side than the whippier side. Probably one of the reasons why I have trouble with my long irons.

Get yourself professionally assessed, and be very honest with them as to your perception of the club feel as you swing different stiffness shafts. The vast majority of non pro players consistently err on the side of having far too stiff a shaft on their clubs.

I consistently get timed between 100 and 103 mph swinging a 5 iron and that's just my regular full swing, it's not like I'm trying to mash it just for test purposes. I play regular stiffness Dynamic Gold SL R300 steel shafts on my irons with no problems of ball control at all. Most amateurs do not swing with a club speed lots faster than mine, yet I see loads of guys playing stiff or even extra stiff shafts who have swing speeds that in no way, shape or form justify that stiffness. All you accomplish with the over the top stiffness is to kill the feel of the club and your distance. JMHO.
