Just got my hands on a Vokey 260.04 (black nickel) and I'm mulling over how to fill in the gap from my PW (Nickent 3dx 44 deg). I'm thinking of a 254.10 or a 254.14 and then a 250.08 or a 248.08 or I'd just get a 52 instead and go with 3 wedges (I have room in the bag for 4 wedges though).

What should I be considering when filling out the bag in the wedge range? I'm still a n00b golfer (less than 15 rounds altogether) but years of pitch and putt have made me pretty nifty around the greens.

thanks,

Think in terms of the space between lofts from your pitching wedge through your lob wedge, e.g. you have a 44* PW and a 60* LW, a 48* wedge and 52* gap wedge and a 56* sand wedge would give you 4* intervals between your wedges - just right . Now, you then need to consider bounce. Your 60* LW has 4* of bounce. You may wish to consider a higher degree of bounce, such as 14* for your sand wedge, and more moderate bounce for your 48* and 52* wedges. Your wedges would then look like this: 248.06, 252.06, 256.14, 260.04. On the other hand, one may argue whether it is necessary for a high handicapper to have so many wedges, especially a 60* wedge. However, if you are drilling down on your shortgame, and really want to work on your shortgame distance control, then this might be the set configuration for you. Also, you may wish to check out Dave Pelz's Shortgame Bible . Hope this helps.

What I would recommend is that instead of focusing on loft, you should focus on filling in distance gaps between your strong pitching wedge and the 60 degree you have. Your distance gaps should not be more than 15 yards between wedges. Get a good distance reading on your pitching wedge and then demo different lofts to make sure your distance spread is as equal as you can get between your wedges. Best wedge in golf - Vokey wedges, hands down!!

Four degrees of bounce might be hard to get used to without lots of practice - I would normally recommend between 8 - 10 degrees of bounce minimum.

Pay close attention to the bounce in your SW. If the courses you play have fluffy sand then go with 12-14 degrees of bounce. If the sand is usually hard or packed down then you should consider an SW with about 8* of bounce. It will make a big difference in your bunker play.

You dont need that many wedges. If you can manage your tee to green better you would only need 3. When I approach say a 405 yard par 4 I start of with a three wood at full swing, 280 yards later I am sitting 125 and I know I can use a full swing lob wedge. If I were 126 I would have a big smile because I know I would hit a 60* 126 and stop it like clockwork.

3wood 280? 60* 125? Your an animal.

Thanks for all the comments - I've only played my current set of clubs out for one round so my point of reference for distance are the range rocks at my local range. Based on that I hit my PW about 115 and my lob wedge about 60-65 which means I should probably get two clubs in between which is what I've started to go with - I picked up a 54.14 Vokey today on eBay and will try to track down a 50.08 next.

Take your time , look at your game then decide which wedges you are going to buy.
If you go out and buy 3 or 4 wedges straight away you will probably end up not using 2 of them.

When playing with your friends try their wedge to get a comparison.
