How would you know which shaft is right for you if you don't get fitted before bying the irons?

Mizuno's shaft optimizer is a good place to start. My understanding is that many stores use it to fit for non-Mizuno irons, too.

Also good are the way many companies have a plug-and-play cart for demoing irons with different shafts.

ok my turn to get my 2cents worth in. the two most important things will determine which clubs to get. today all irons are too long and too strong. do yourself a favour and buy a set of forged irons so you can adjust the lies after you cut down the shafts. swingweights will go down but you will gain more control of the clubhead, will probably swing better, will probably make better contact, will be easier to square head at impact and in the end will probably not lose any yardage at all - may actually gain some. the second most important thing is the loft. having long irons bunched together in 2deg increments and having to add a gap wedge makes no sense. forged heads will allow you to have them bent to reasonable increments starting with the PW. only 10 years ago mizuno MP-14's had 50 deg PW and went down in 4deg incr from there. no gap wedges then. hogan wedge 10yrs ago was 49. today bobby jones would just shake his head at how marketing has taken over. 46" drivers. get real. who can hit fairways with a 46" driver. i bet most would get more length if they cut down their driver 2".

Welcome to the forum man.

I agree on the shorter driver. If for no other reason the average golfer would hit the sweet spot more reliably with the 2" shorter driver. We have been over sold on the long sticks.

I love my gap wedge and it is one of my most used clubs. SW is 90-95 yards for me, PW is 120-125. My GW is my go to club from 100-115.

Cast irons can be altered for lie as well as forged irons. While there is a risk of them cracking, any fitter worth their salt will have no trouble altering cast clubs. 20 years of golf and I have never bought a forged club. All my clubs are 2 deg upright. Just pointing this out for the sake of anyone reading the above post and thinking only forged clubs can be adjusted.

    • Tale of two swings.  Swing 1: Slightly outside takeaway (hands move outside of target line) only to allow trail elbow over collapsing at P4. Doesn't take much to overdo it for the trail elbow collapse to only further exaggerate. That's death. Swing 2: Hands stay slight in at takeaway for a much better trail elbow condition at P4. This is a hard sell from an instinct perspective. More focus on un-weighting and re-weighting of lead foot to unlock a bit more mobility of hips and torso. A major flaw that creeps up often is me swinging flat footed and becoming overly armsy-collapsy as a result. Got reminded of this the hard way during my 2nd round match for club net championship. Was cruising along 2up until I made the turn. Then lost the swing for next five holes. Andy was playing good enough to capitalize. By the time I regained my swing on 16th, it was too late. Even Andy was like "That was a gift". Obviously that stings because have played well enough lately. Should have closed him out of the game comfortably with a few holes to spare. Shoulda woulda coulda. Tough lesson. Damn. P.S. I know the swings look very similar but trust me there is a difference.
