Let's say my ball ends up resting in the center base trunk of a tree where there is no clearance at all for a shot. Literally you would have to crawl in to even retrieve the ball.

Under penalty of a shot, can I call unplayable lie and replace the ball position, keeping the tree between me and the hole, and go DIRECTLY back, keeping a straight line between me, the tree, and the hole..as far as I want?

Yes, thats one of your options. Rule 28

If the player deems his ball to be unplayable, he must, under penalty of one stroke:

(a) Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or (b) Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the holeand the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or (c) Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole.
