what does it mean when you want a golf ball to "check" when hitting a ball towards the green?

It's when you hit the ball and instead of the ball rolling along the green, it'll stop close to where it first hit the green. Pros and other really good players can make it stop immediately, less accomplished players can get the ball to slow down and not roll as far as it would otherwise, and for others the ball just rolls off of the green.

when a player wants a ball to "check" he/she wants it to stop right where it lands. It has to do with the amount of spin that is put on the ball when it hits.
