HI everyone, Icould use some advice.  Recently started golfing this year after blowing out my knee and needing to do something to expend energy.  I am an athletic and coordinated person (despite destroying my knee...it really wasnt my fault), and have only been golfing about 15 times but have shot a 90 3 times and got a couple birdies already.  I am no where near good, but i am/will be obsessed so WILL GET better...

I currently have Mizouno "players irons"  given to me from a friend who bought some hogans knowing i would get hooked if i didnt have to spend money...well it worked.  Problem is i dont think i am quite good enough to play with them consistently.  I drive well, and usually 2-putt but my irons are atrocious, literally most of my strokes are on my irons (as i will skull the ball or hist it so poorly it goes 40yds).  But when i hit the sweet spot the ball flies...

Thus the help...i read reviews (on this forum and others) and it seems to me i am between the R9's and the burners.  The R9s are sexy, and i am afraid i am i am acting like i was in college, going after looks...but i want to grow with the clubs and not outgrow...

Money isnt really an issue, i am blessed to have a good and consistant job, although i would like to save and spend on my wife....so i can actually be allowed to go golfing...bribery is the quickest way to her heart...

also anyother suggestions i would love!!

Thanks for all your help!

I cant say much for the burners but I do play the R9s and absolutely love them.  Ive been more consistent with my irons but whether that is from the irons over my previous ones or just being more consistent with me swing is unknown.

Honestly, if you're athletic and coordinated you should be fine with the Mizunos.  Burners or R9s won't help if you're skulling the ball or chunking it 40 yds-just spend some time at the range with the Mizunos.

I feel ya, I play the burner tp and also have the burner plus. I love the looks of the r9 but find them to not suit my swing. If you use the mpf as a guide the burners are in the 525 range , and the r9 is among the lowest scored club made today at a 97. http://www.golfworks.com/images/art/2010MPFRatingsChart.pdf Depending on the mizunos you have they are probably in the 350 range of playability. Between the 2 you listed, I would choose the burners...... But you really need to head to a golf shop with a video range and swing a few different sets to see for yourself. Personally I wish I would have gotten callaway x24 but couldn't afford them at the time. Hang on to those mizunis, after you get a swing groved and can ball strike consistently you may want to go back to them. Oh and read stack and tilt, in my opinion it is the fast track to developing and understanding a repeatable swing. Sure changed my game for the better, dropped my scores from the 105 to 80 in 4 months with some reasonably hard work and dedication.

When a company makes a club in the USA I will proudly display their brand here. All of mine were made in china by somebody making $2 a day. Shame on you Mr club manufacture.

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
