In the back swing your legs stay completely quiet, and the shoulders rotate? or does the entire torso rotate on the take away? i believe i am just confusing myself and i just need clarification.

Your legs dont' stay quiet, they rotate as well.. Most pro's get 40-45 degrees of hip rotation with 85 to 90+ of shoulder rotation. So the legs certainly don't remain still. If this is because the concept of the X-Factor then that has been disproven already. Jim Mclean who advocated the X-Factor for years took it out of his recent updated version of his book. Basically distance is found more with players who have a larger hand drop from the top of the backswing to when the hands start moving down. Look at Bubba, his hands are high in the backswing, and they drop down fast.

The only thing you don't want to be doing is rotateing your hips at the same rate and same degree as your shoulder. I would put it as, Don't think about your hips moving in the backswing, your shoudler rotation + torso rotation will turn them. But don't think you have to force your hips to stay quiet or keep them from turning back, that will just impede shoulder rotation.

You definitely don't want quiet legs, unless you are trying to flip the club.  You should turn into your right side, and let the hips rotate.  Don't rotate the lumbar region because it wasn't designed to rotate very much.  You want roughly 45 degrees of hip rotation with as much upper shoulder rotation as your torso will allow.  The golf swing is legs and shoulders.  If your legs don't get engaged early, you won't engage them at the top.

OK.  I re-read your post and I think you are wondering how to start the swing.  Is that right?  Some people do it differently with different sequencing and are pretty effective.  I like to take it away all in one piece:  legs, hands, shoulders and arms.
