Selfmade Putting Tutor HowTo

Hi, everybody!

After watching Phil's short game DVD I googled Pelz' putting tutor, and after seeing the price I decided to make one on my own.

Here's a short howto:

Material: 1mm aluminum

Tools: hacksaw, drill, 5mm drillbit, countersink, file, sandpaper 80grit, marker pen

*) Just mark the outline of the tutor on a sheet of aluminum and cut it out with the hacksaw, see that the "bottom" end (where you put the ball later) is as straight as possible.

*) file the edges round and deburr all edges

*) mark the places for the marbles

*) drill the holes for the mables (5mm) and countersink them

*) sand the edges and the surface until it gets some satin finish (to make the ball slide less and have more "grip")

*) mark the ball place (40mm from the bottom edge) with the 5mm drill but don't drill through

*) draw the centerline square to the bottom edge

*) draw 2 lines parallel to the centerline, each one 25mm from the centerline

*) DONE

All in all, the whole tutor cost me nothing, zero, nada, 0,- because I had a sheet of aluminum in the workshop.

Ok, the marbles will be about 50cents...

Since I'm still waiting for my marbles to arrive, I don't know, if 10mm or 12mm will be best, but the calculated diameter could be 12mm.

Even without the marbles, just using the tutor on my indoor putting setup already helped me to work on my setup and get a good straight putting stroke.

With the 5mm holes you can even use 2 tees on the putting green to

a) fix the tutor so it doesn't move

b) use as gates instead of marbles

I looked at the pictures at the Pelz website and derived these measurements off of the size of the golfball (42-44mm diameter) showed there:

length: 220mm

wide end: 135mm

short end: 80mm

marble diameter: 12mm

distance between marble centers:

normal setting: 62mm

pro setting: 56mm

super pro: 50mm

And that's how it looks:

Sadly I made an error measuring the holes for the pro-setting, but that doesn't matter to me, I will use the normal and super-pro settings...

Edit: _and_ I mis-measured the first line parallel to the centerline *g*

maybe this will give others some help making one...

You don't have to be - but then you should be better with a file ;-)

it's quite simple to make one, I spent quite too much time making everything perfect.

The most important things to make sure:

- the front and back edge are parallel and straight (so you can set you putter head this way)

- the ball starting line is perpendicular to the back edge, so you don't misalign

- if possible, keep the ball starting line right in the middle between the marble holes

Nice job Michi.

I was put off the putting tutor by the price myself. I decided that I would do my own too! I have a putting matt in my house and decided to mark the lines onto that instead of making something seperate as I didn't see myself using it on a proper putting green. The practice green at my course is always too busy to get the opertunity to use such a device!

These are a couple of pictures of how it worked out. I heated a nail and burnt a small hole in the matt so the ball always goes into the same spot each time!

That's Awesome! I was considering making one myself. Thanks for all the measurements, now you've made my job easier.  I'm thinking about making mine out of 1/8" plastic. We have a CNC at work, so I should be able to just draw it in CAD then cut it out.

In that case, how about banging out a couple dozen for your buds at the Sand Trap.

Wow, that putting mat is fantastic pierce!

I think I'll borrow that for my mat at home, too. Much easier than using the tutor!

Please SAVE YOUR $MONEY!!!!  Just get a flat stainless steel (no rust) 12 inch ruler, with a hole already put in for you, to set the ball into, & practice hitting the ball down a 12" line.  You can probably pick one up @ staples/office depot/or any drafting supply house.  It works great!!!  If you want to be creative, then use two tees as a gate @ the end of the ruler, but you really don't need to be so technical.  Just roll the ball on the ruler for the entire length.  The one I use is a "GAEBEL ENTERPRISES, INC., MODEL 1014" Mark

Late to the party I know...how bout a metal yard stick...quite a challenge!
