Played the VR Blades for one season. I'm longer and more consistent with my current VR Split C's.

Why do you think majority of Tour players don't use a full set of blades...

Because they don't play just for fun, like we do?

... They can get any club in the world and most of them use clubs with some sort of cavity. Most PGA Tour players want to win, if they could hit a blade better than a cavity, I imagine they would.

The cavity back will be more forgiving, hence you will probably be able to "step on it" more than a mb, (muscle back aka blade), hence it will go consistently a little further. At least that is what I've found between my 3 mb and 3 cb.

This years Niki's irons are impressive. I bought this years full cavity back 2i with a PX 6.0 shaft and couldn't be happier. Doesn't go as far as my hybrid iron, (Bridgestone Air Muscle), but I really like the feel and can work it.

I'd suggest the Pro combo set. That way you have forgivness in the long and mid irons and better distance control with the scoring irons. (mb's have better distance control than cb's, so it makes sense to me to have those in the scoring clubs as accuracy & distance control are more important with the scoring irons, but thats just my feeling).

How forgiving are the blades within the combo set? Are they more or less like the rest of the blade market or are they a tad easier to hit.

To the OP how do you like the AP2's? And why did you go from PX 6.0 to 5.0?

It really depends on the swing. I tested both the blades & the pro combo set yesterday.... Currently using Mizuno MP-60's w/ Px 5.5

yesterday I tested both with a PX 6.0 shaft. I hit the pro combo set terribly compard to my mp-60's and I hit the VR Blades better than my MP-60's

current distance:

MP-60 - 6 iron 185

Pro Combo - 6 Iron 170

VR Blade - 6 iron 197

Those are huge differences every way. What do you think caused the differences?

I wouldn't play a full set of blades(3-PW) if your over a 10hc. You need to be a striker, not saying you can't learn though. The additional feel and distance was not worth the sacrifice of consistency. For me at least.

The VR Pro Combo blades are just that, VR Blades. Your 8-PW are the easies irons to hit normally. Great set of clubs period. The only thing I didn't like was I would the 5i further than the 4i.

A lot of guys do go with blades, so obviously they work for some people. Different strokes for different folks.

If I was playing courses set up like they are and my livlihood depended on it, I'd probably have some players cavity backs. Much like the Cleveland TA3s I have in my bag-o-spares right now (still winter here - experimenting). I'm thinking I'll play my TA1s more often, until I get used to the yardages of the TA3s, then see where that takes me.

I suspect one reason that not as many guys use blades on tour these days because they're making better players CBs lately. When the OEMs come out with new blades a lot of guys try them and some switch but others don't. Maybe DJ shoulda stuck with his GI/player irons?!?!? The sponsors want their guys to carry equipment that looks similar to their retail offerings, and that's mostly GI irons right now. They don't sell a lot of blades anyway, but guys who prefer blades can get better selection off ebay.

I don't know...
to be honest every other cavity back that I've hit i've hit MUCH longer than my clubs... I'm giving the mp-60 yardage based on avg distance for the club I'd pull for how far from the pin I am if i'm going right at it.....

the vr blade 5 and 6 to be honest felt more comfortable in my hands than the pro combo.... but not as comfortable as the mp-60's, but I hit them the best out of all the clubs I've hit over the past 2 years.

I would've figured I would have gotten less distance b/c I moved from a 5.5 to a 6.0 on the shaft for the clubs I was testing.
